3 Student Wellbeing Service Student Wellbeing provides a range of services, information and guidance to help students achieve successful completion of their studies: Counselling and Mental Health Team Disability Support Team Specialist Learning Team Student Financial Support Team Chaplaincy What we offer…

4 Counselling and Mental Health Team Our therapists are professionally qualified and experienced to help students with issues such as: Anxiety Bullying Childhood abuse/trauma Eating distress Loss e.g. bereavement, divorce Low mood & depression Relationships/family difficulties Sexuality Self esteem issues Transitions – e.g. home sickness

5 Counselling and Mental Health Team Initial Appointments & Discussion To arrange an initial appointment come to King’s Gate reception, phone us or complete a web form From here, we will decide how to best meet your particular needs, e.g.: 1:1 therapy One of our groups e.g. to help with anxiety; depression; work block and procrastination On-line counselling Signposting to additional services On-line resources and self-help

6 Counselling and Mental Health Team Consultancy Therapists offer advice for staff, friends and family, where there are concerns about a student’s mental health We must have the student’s consent to discuss them, but can speak about someone hypothetically Call 0191 208 3333 and leave details – a team member on consultancy duty will ring back

7 Confidentiality The Counselling and Mental Health Team provide a confidential service. Any personal or sensitive medical information the student shares with us is confidential If this information is to be shared with others in the University we require the student’s explicit written consent The student is entitled to know the purpose for which it is being disclosed *There are some exceptions. 8 Disability Advisers What do we mean by a Disability/ Long term medical condition? Specific Learning Difficulty E.g. Dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism, Asperger's syndrome Mental Health Disability E.g. Depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders Sensory impairment E.g. Deaf, hard of hearing, blind, partially sighted Physical impairment / Mobility Issues E.g. Wheelchair user, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis Long Term Medical condition E.g. Diabetes, epilepsy, severe migraines, Crohn’s disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, eczema, asthma, allergies, heart-related problems, brain damage injuries, stroke, cancer, HIV and any other long term medical condition which has a substantial and long-term negative affect on your ability to do normal daily tasks

9 The role of Disability Adviser Talk to applicants and students about their support requirements Assist in applying for the Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA) Help to arrange assessments of study support requirements Liaise with the Examinations Office about exam arrangements Inform academic schools regarding appropriate support

10 Specialist Learning Support Work with students with specific learning difficulties e.g. dyslexia, dyspraxia, AD(H)D & Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Support for developing study skills- Specialist 1:1 tuition e.g. organisation and time management, developing critical analysis skills, dissertation support Skills Signposting - signposting students to study skills resources to support independent skills development Social Mentoring- support to develop social skills & access social activities Autism and Asperger Support Network (AASN)-a peer-support group for students who have Autism/Aspergers Syndrome

11 Student Financial Support Team Provide hardship funding for students experiencing financial difficulties Award many bursaries and scholarships to UK and international students Deal with US Federal and Canadian Provincial funding Advise on budgeting and money management Offer one to one student appointments Hold drop-ins 2-4pm every Wednesday and Thursday

12 What else is available Personal Tutor: Meeting and establishing contact is extremely important University Security: police the campus and provide crime prevention information – PC Al Gibson Chaplaincy - committed to religious tolerance, diversity and respect, welcomes students from all faiths or none. The chaplains are from different Christian denominations and major world faiths Nightline: a student run listening service 8pm to 8am SAC (Student Advice Centre): The SAC can provide free, confidential advice on a wide range of topics.
