Purpose Question What is the effect of different solutions on a chicken egg?

Research Questions See handout. Answer all questions before starting lab.

Hypothesis I think when I put the egg in vinegar it will __________________ because… For non-honors, choose one as a group. For honors, do both. I think when I put the egg in distilled water it will __________________ because… I think when I put the egg in corn syrup it will ___________________ because…

Materials Cups Eggs Tape Ruler String Wax paper Marker Triple beam balance Vinegar Distilled water Corn syrup Graduated cylinder Napkins Rubber bands

Data ObservationsMass (g)Size (cm) Before Vinegar After Vinegar After water/ syrup

Procedures Day 1: Honors 1.Using the tape, label the cups “Cup A” and “Cup B”. Include your group number and your period. 2.Observe egg. Record in table. 3.Measure the circumference of the eggs at the largest point. Record in table. 4.Measure the mass of the eggs using the triple beam balance. Record in table. 5.Measure out 150 mL of vinegar and put into each cup. 6.Gently place one egg in each cup. 7.Cover cups with wax paper. 8.Wash hands with soap and water. 9.Allow egg to sit overnight.

Procedures Day 1: Regular Using the tape, label the cup with your group number and period Observe your egg. Record in table. Measure the circumference of the egg at its largest point. Record in table. Measure the mass of the egg using the triple beam balance. Record in table. Measure out 150 mL of vinegar and put in cup. Gently place the egg into the cup. Cover with wax paper. Wash hands with soap and water. Allow egg to sit overnight.

Procedures Day 2: Honors 1.Get your supplies 2.Remove eggs from vinegar. Place on paper towel. Observe. Record data. (Take some time to play with the egg. Be careful) 3.Find the mass of the eggs. 4.Find the circumference of the eggs. 5.Empty vinegar into proper container. Rinse cups. 6.Measure out 150 ml of distilled water. Put in Cup A. Place egg A in cup. 7.Measure out 150 ml of corn syrup. Put in Cup B. Place egg B in cup. 8.Cover cups with wax paper and rubber bands. 9.Wash your hands! 10.Let sit over night.

Procedures Day 2: Regular 1.Get your supplies 2.Remove egg from vinegar. Place on paper towel. Observe. Record data. (Take some time to play with the egg. Be careful) 3.Find the mass of the egg. 4.Find the circumference of the egg. 5.Empty vinegar into proper container. Rinse cup. 6.Measure out 150 ml of distilled water/corn syrup. Put in cup with egg. 7.Cover cup with wax paper and rubber bands. 8.Wash your hands! 9.Let sit over night.

Procedures Day 3: Honors 1.Get materials. 2.Remove eggs from cup. Place on paper towel. 3.Observe, measure the size, and find the mass of each egg. 4.If you want, pop the eggs to see the inside contents…make sure you clean up the tables afterwards. 5.Discard cups, napkins, and eggs.

Procedures Day 3: Regular 1.Get materials. 2.Remove egg from cup. Place on paper towel. 3.Observe, measure the size, and find the mass of the egg. 4.If you want, pop the egg to see the inside contents…make sure you clean up the tables afterwards. 5.Discard cups, napkins, and egg.

Analysis Questions See handout. Answer all questions in complete sentences. Use graph paper to make your line graph.

Conclusion Includes.. – Answer to your purpose question – Was your hypothesis right or wrong? Why? – What could you do in the future to extend this experiment?
