Authors: Mateusz Jarus, Ewa Kowalczuk, Michał Madziar, Ariel Oleksiak, Andrzej Pałejko, Michał Witkowski Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center GICOMP Green IT Control and Measurement Platform

Problems 31% of computers are not turned off after working hours (PC Energy Report, UK NEF) There are a lot of breaks during office work Idle computer utilizes 90-120W LCD monitor takes 20-30W Energy prices constantly rise Machines must be sometimes turned on after working hours: backup, update

PC power usage

Ways to save energy Turning off monitors during short breaks at work (e.g. 1-5 min) Suspending machines to RAM during longer breaks (e.g. more than 5 min) Turning off machines after working hours Turning on machines according to specified schedule: User preferences Updates and backups

Estimation of savings Assumptions: 105W PC 25W Monitor LCD 30% not turned off at night 10% not turned off during weekends 2 long breaks during day 5 short breaks during day per year

GICOMP Save energy in environments with large number of computers Easily manage multiple machines from one place Create power policies for groups of computers Monitor and control energy usage (also control at outlet level) Analyze historical energy consumption (up to one year back)

GICOMP Easily manage large groups of computers Specify same power policies for multiple computers Programs on the nodes can be installed with a few clicks

Task: OS Power Management capabilities Be cross platform... Windows Linux Mac OS X PM capabilties ACPI states – suspend, hibernate, turn off More options – dim/turn off display, turn off hard disk, manage wireless adapter settings Wake-on-LAN Export functionality and information over a network

GICOMP Architecture Roles: GUI – user- friendy flash interface Manager – accepts requests from GUI, saves data in database Service – controls nodes, sends requests Node – OS-level info and functionality Waker - brings up a group of Nodes

Power usage monitoring Two options: Power monitoring devices – precise… but expensive Power usage approximated by software – doesn’t cost anything, easy to install Software: Takes into account mainly CPU Linear approximation Min and max power usage values specified for every computer

Historical power usage Data saved in RRD database – round-robin database Historical data available up to one year back Possible to retrieve power usage statistics for selected computer, as well as for a group of machines

Current state and future work Current state: Beta release available! Machine power state management works Test server is available for everyone Deployed in City Hall in Grodzisk Wlkp. Future work: Live demo with video streaming for everyone Extensive large-scale testing (~500 machines) More power management capabilities More advanced energy consumption analysis

Deployment in City Hall GICOMP deployed in City Hall in Grodzisk Wlkp. Constantly monitoring power usage of 20 computers 5 different „generations” of machines Power policies applied on every computer Access through web browser

Precise energy monitoring at home Precise monitoring of devices at home: Using e-sockets Using smart meters Processing unit may be installed on the subscriber’s router: Using GICOMP infrastructure Rich visualization of energy usage: Feedback from user Better adjustment to tariffs

Precise energy monitoring at home Usage of subscriber’s lines Precise monitoring of devices at home Contact with the subscriber

Precise energy monitoring at home Vendor could supply with e-sockets and software installed on routers in exchange for collecting data about energy usage Profits for client Energy usage visualization Automatic shutdown of devices according to schedules or remote control of devices Reduced energy costs by better adjutment to tariffs Profits for vendor: Reduced peak network load by proposing clients individual tariffs and promoting other hours of energy use Marketing information that may be sold, e.g.: users in this area have old TV sets Feedback from user – contact with the consultant online

Our conception of smart homes Smart homes solutions are currently very expensive and not popular Google Android@Home Royalty-free specification for smart homes Integration with Android phones Open environments for building automation: Arduino What does it change? Royalty-free very welcome in China Easy access for users: consumer devices First devices: Google Lightbulb (Lighting Science) Android@Home fits well into our conception of home monitoring
