The Sustainable Development Charter encourages and enables organisations in Wales to become more sustainable – to make decisions that produce the best long-term outcomes for themselves and for the future of Wales. The Sustainable Development Charter is Wales’ highest profile commitment to sustainable development. Signing the Charter is a voluntary commitment aimed at improving the economic, social and environmental well- being of Wales. Over 275 pioneering organisations have demonstrated their commitment to sustainable development by signing the Charter and are creating momentum for positive change. About the Charter

3. Signatories 2014/15 Number of Signatories by financial year: In 2014/15 there have been to date (Feb) 80 new signatories bringing the total number of signatories to 276.

5. Engagement Activity in 2014/15 We have held 12 events this year across Wales. The themes of these events have included: SD Policy Development The Well-being of Future Generation Bill Collaborative Working SD Reporting Over 120 individuals have attended these events. “The recent shared learning event on writing a sustainable development policy was an invigorating experience largely because of the interaction between colleagues of different sectors. It underlined the value of the Charter as a mechanism for bringing together different perspectives under a common aim”. Rhodri Thomas Cynnal Cymru.

7. SD Charter Annual Challenge 2014/15 79 organisations submitted their evidence to us around the deadline. This evidence has been analysed and the results of that analysis follows.

15. Collaborative Challenges We asked signatories to volunteer to take part in Collaborative Challenges. 16. Collaborative Challenge Feedback We held a workshop in Llandrindod Wells with consultants from A Sustainable Place. The results from this were a linked nested set of principles for Collaboration, these were presented at this morning’s ‘Governance for the Wales We Want’ Workshop A tool that has been created from the findings of the Llandrindod workshop will be shared with Charter Signatories.

17. 2015 Charter Challenges This year we are asking organisations who have signed the Charter to provide us with evidence that can be used to assist the Public Sector in preparation for the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Bill. At the core of the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Bill are a set of five governance approaches, which set-out how public bodies and Public Service Boards should work going forward. These could have an important role to play in introducing common principles to the operations of the public sector bodies and others, and helping to deliver more integrated solutions.

19. 2015 Charter Challenges We have identified through analysis of evidence sent to us in 2014/15 that organisations who have signed the Charter are not always reporting in an integrated way and whilst they are doing good things, they do not make the link between social, environmental, economic and cultural factors there is also information missing in terms of the Welsh impact. We suggest that organisations look at the goals listed below – to effectively report on your how sustainable you are, you should be able to show how you are using these approaches effectively.

20. 2015 Charter Challenges The Goals as of Feb 27 th 2015: A Prosperous Wales.An innovative, productive and low carbon society which recognises the limits of the global environment and therefore uses resources efficiently and proportionately (including acting on climate change); and which develops a skilled and well-educated population in an economy which generates wealth and provides employment opportunities, allowing people to take advantage of the wealth generated through securing decent work. A resilient Wales. A nation which maintains and enhances a biodiverse natural environment with healthy functioning ecosystems that support social, economic and ecological resilience and the capacity to adapt to change (for example climate change). A healthier Wales. A society in which people’s physical and mental well-being is maximised and in which choices and behaviours that benefit future health are understood. A more equal Wales. A society that enables people to fulfil their potential no matter what their background or circumstances (including their socio economic background and circumstances). A Wales of cohesive communities. Attractive, viable, safe and well-connected communities. A Wales of vibrant culture and thriving Welsh language. A society that promotes and protects culture, heritage and the Welsh language, and which encourages people to participate in the arts, and sports and recreation. A globally responsible Wales. A nation which, when doing anything to improve the economic, social, environmental and cultural well-being of Wales, takes account of whether doing such a thing may make a positive contribution to global well-being.
