2 Nouns A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing or idea.
Persons: Mrs. Platinsky, teacher, student Places: Lazar Middle School, classroom Things: desk, football Ideas: happiness, self-control, democracy

A proper noun names a particular person, place, thing or idea. It always begins with a capital letter. A common noun names any one of a group of persons, places, things or ideas. It generally is not capitalized.

5 Concrete and Abstract Nouns
A concrete noun names a person, place, or thing that can be perceived by one or more of the senses (sight, sound, taste, touch, smell). An abstract noun names an idea, a feeling, a quality, or a characteristic. Concrete nouns poster, music, beans, heat, Florida Abstract nouns love, fun, freedom, pride, beauty

6 Singular and Plural Nouns
A singular noun names one person, place, thing or idea. Example: wish, box, dog, ring A plural noun names two or more persons, places, things or ideas. Example: wishes, boxes, dogs, rings

7 Forming Plural Nouns Add s to most singular nouns to make the plural form. Example: uncle--uncles Add es to singular nouns that end in sh, ch, s, ss, or x to make the plural form. Example: lunch--lunches, boss--bosses If a noun ends with a consonant and y, change the y to i and add es to make the plural form. Example: balcony—balconies If a noun ends with a vowel and y, add s to make the plural form. Example: display--displays

9 Funky Plural Nouns If a noun ends in f or fe, add s, OR change the f or fe to v and add es, to make the plural form. 10 Funky Plural Nouns Some singular nouns change their spelling to make the plural form. Other nouns are the same in the singular and in the plural. These plural nouns you just have to memorize!
