Key Elements of BS 8555 Staged approach to EMS Logical & systematic
Implementation can proceed at a pace complimentary to other pressures Helps develop relationships between suppliers and customers Promotes performance-based management Can lead to ISO and/or EMAS
6
Key Elements of BS 8555 Incorporates ISO14031 – environmental performance evaluation and uses indicators Practical to organisations of all sizes and sectors Enables efficient allocation of resources 6 Phases broken down into stages Each stage profile provides a guide to achieving stage BS 8555 is a model for an effective EMS that reduces the risk of the organisation in terms of their environmental impacts and improving their performance. It allows for the allocation of the right resources at the right time through a logical and consistent approach. The 6 phases of the standard are broken down into stages. Each stage profile provides a comprehensive guide to the organisation to achieving that stage. It covers why the stage should be carried out, when, how and by who. Thus employees are involved at every stage. The stage profiles also cover inputs and outputs along with the achievement criteria.

Developing Objectives & Targets
Stage Heading Developing Objectives & Targets Phase 3 Stage Why Objectives and targets developed to support the broad aims stated in the environmental policy, will form a central part of the EMS. They need to be related to the most significant aspects. Objectives and targets will provide a clear focus for EMS activity and also provide milestones against which to track and benchmark performance. The setting of objectives and targets to support policy aims and commitments is also a requirement of ISO14001. When Once significant aspects and/or impacts have been identified and the environmental policy finalised. Who The EMS implementation team, key parties, and top management.
15
Additional Support Tools
How A range of objectives and targets for the organisation which support the broad aims stated in the environmental policy, and the continual improvement in environmental performance linked to the most significant aspects. Additional Support Tools ISO14001 and ISO14004. Suggested Inputs Typical Outputs Finalised environmental policy. Information from Phases 1 and 2, and Stage 3.1. · Identify the broad aims stated in the environmental policy. · Identify factors which have the greatest influence over the performance of the organisation in relation to these aims including the list of significant aspects developed in Stage 3.1. Establish objectives to improve performance against policy objectives and the most significant aspects as identified. Establish detailed targets, where feasible, to directly support the achievement of each objective.
16
Acorn Achievement Criteria
Stage Profiles Acorn Achievement Criteria % Achieved Completed 3.3.a) Documented objectives and targets appropriate to the scale and nature of the organisation, its policy commitments, and its significant aspects (or impacts).

Baseline Assessment Typical Outputs Site Plan General scope of EMS
List of likely significant environmental aspects and associated impacts List of key legal requirements Identification of initial opportunities
21
Baseline Assessment Achievement Criteria
Information showing most likely significant environmental aspects of the business Information about key legal requirements Information regarding the site, the history of the site, and any environmental implications.
22
Undertaking a Baseline Assessment
Split into groups and discuss: What you would include in your baseline assessment ? How you would go about undertaking your baseline assessment ? How you would evidence your baseline assessment ?
23
Getting Started
24
Colour Coding High Risk Emissions to air Discharges to water
Land Contamination Generation of waste Use of natural resources Interaction
25
Process Flow Inputs Outputs PROCESS Labour Water Heat Effluent
Electricity Raw Materials Gas/Oil Fuel Heat Effluent Noise Waste Air Emissions PROCESS Product to customer
26
BS 8555 & Supply Chains Allows you to differentiate between different groups and types of suppliers and specify the phase that they need to achieve by risk. Allows you to specify environmental performance criteria. Allows you demonstrate that your suppliers are improving their environmental performance.
27
Use of Indicators Acorn introduces indicators to track environmental performance against objectives and targets, and customer and legal requirements. Similarly, indicators are used to track progress against the implementation of the system. Indicators are developed using the ISO14031 criteria
28
Validation of environmental data
Client sets indicators Supplier monitors performance Independent 3rd party validation Inspector produces report Client reports environmental performance of supply chain Indicators can be independently verified as part of the Acorn inspection process. The inspector can validate data related to operational or product environmental characteristics and include this as an annex in his or her report. This can then be disseminated as appropriate. Allows businesses to report on the environmental performance of their supply chain.
29
Examples of indicators
kWh of electricity/tonne of product tonnes of packaging supplied (material specific) heavy metal content in product percentage of FSC wood supplied VOC content of coating materials recycled product content tonnes of waste recycled Indicators can be independently verified as part of the Acorn inspection process. The inspector can validate data related to operational or product environmental characteristics and include this as an annex in his or her report. This can then be disseminated as appropriate. Allows businesses to report the environmental performance of their supply chain.

The Acorn Register
32
Benefits of BS 8555/Acorn Spreads the cost Evaluation of progress
National recognition through inspection to the IEMA Acorn scheme External audits lead to greater customer satisfaction Value added BS 8555 can be implemented at a pace to suit the organisation, a target may be set to achieve Phase 1 recognition in 12 months. This way the costs can be spread and a close eye can be kept on the progress through the process of evaluation required by the standard. Although written as an implementation guidance document, accredited recognition at the various phases is available. This gives a organisation the opportunity to gain a certificate of registration, thus demonstrating that they have been externally audited and proving that they have met the stage profiles and achievement criteria of that particular phase. The audit/ inspection process can also been seen as a value added part of the process. A highly skilled and knowledgeable, independent auditor can add value by identifying observations or opportunities for improvement during the inspection phase. As a UKAS accredited activity and through the IEMA register the achievemnet of the organisation is recognised. The certificate demonstrates that the organisation has an effective process in place.
