Project aim: what is ozone depletion?
BY-Hemlata Shelake Ankita Kshatriya
2
What is ozone A colorless gas Highly reactive gas
Composed of three oxygen atoms Two kinds of ozone –Good and Bad Good Ozone: protects us from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. Bad Ozone: Ozone pollution or smog.
3
What is ozone depletion?
The continent-size hole in Earth's ozone layer keeps getting bigger and bigger.
4
ODS (Ozone Depleting Substances)
Substances (ODSs) are those substances which deplete the ozone layer. Used in refrigerators, air conditioners, fire extinguishers, in dry cleaning, agricultural fumigants.
5
Name of ozone depleting substances
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), Hydro chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), Halons, Methyl bromide, Carbon tetrachloride, and Methyl chloroform.
6
Effect on Environment Temperature Agriculture Health Rainfall
7
Environmental Effects of Ozone Depletion
8
Effect On Temperature The term "climate change" is known as "global warming." Temperature is rise by 2-3 degree. This term is also known as green house effect.
9
Effect On Agriculture World Health Organization estimates that a quarter of the world's disease burden is due to the contamination of air, water, soil and food Solar radiation, temperature, and precipitation are the main drivers of crop growth; therefore agriculture has always been highly dependent on climate patterns and variations
10
Effect On Health The list of infectious diseases influenced by UV-B exposures continues to grow. Ozone depletion and climate change may interact to enhance the spread and/or severity of a number of diseases
11
Effect On Rainfall
12
Sources of ODS
13
Control Measures Plant trees and don't burn plastics. We really have very little control over the issue. Buy air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment that do not use HCFCs as refrigerant. Regular inspection and maintenance of air-conditioning and refrigeration appliances
14
Do the motor vehicle air-conditioners servicing regularly.
