7 th GRADE Household Cylinder Math Activity

TN STATE STANDARDS 7.4.2.b.-Select and apply techniques and tools to accurately measure length, perimeter, area, volume, and angles to appropriate levels of precision. 7.4.2.c.-Develop and use formulas to determine the circumference of circles and the area of triangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, and circles. 7.4.2.e.-Develop strategies to determine the surface area and volume of selected prisms and cylinders. 7.4.spi.3-Convert from one unit to another within the same system. 7.4.tp1.1-Understand and use both metric and customary systems of measurement.

Help your student’s relate geometry and measurement to things they use in everyday life.

Instructions for Teacher 1.Provide each group of students with three different sizes of unopened cans (canned food works well).

Instructions, cont. 2.Provide each group of students with rulers and/or metersticks and a blank data chart.

Instructions for Students Record all data on the chart provided. You may use the back of the chart or other blank paper to figure answers. Using the metric side of a ruler or a meterstick, in millimeters find the diameter and radius of one end of each can. Find the circumference and area of that same end of the can. Figure the surface area and volume of each can. Convert all answers from millimeters to centimeters.

Formulas: Circumference = πd or π(2r) Area = πr² Surface area = 2( πr²) + 2(πr) · h Volume = πr² · h

Notes: π = 3.14 area & surface area are written in square units (i.e.-mm²; cm²) volume is written in cubic units(i.e.-mm³; cm³).
