Welcome to the AAP Section of Medical Students, Residents, & Fellowship Trainees (SOMSRFT) 2010-2011 Obesity Advocacy Campaign

SOMSRFT Advocacy Campaign Each year the SOMSRFT takes on an advocacy project that is launched at the National Conference & Exhibition (NCE). This year, in conjunction with the AAP collaboration with the White House, Bright Futures, and other national organizations fighting childhood obesity, our Section (SOMSRFT) has decided to get in the ring and target childhood obesity for our advocacy campaign.

SOMSRFT Advocacy Campaign With the support of the AAP Obesity Initiative and the staff dedicated to working with collaborators to reduce childhood obesity rates… we have created our own campaign. The aim is to make it easy, straight forward, and time- efficient. All the things we as medical students, residents and fellowship trainees need to fit into our busy lives.

Your Role as a Leader As resident program delegate and representative of the AAP, your role is to lead the campaign at your residency program. We have put together a CD, as well as a Web site and an online networking group to assist you with this endeavor. We will continue to bring you updates to make your role easy & fun.

On the CD On the CD you will find 2 resources: AAP SOMSRFT Obesity Advocacy Presentation This is what we want you to give at your program. Hand-out for AAP SOMSRFT Obesity Advocacy Presentation Feel free to make copies to distribute

On the CD AAP SOMSRFT Obesity Advocacy Presentation This PowerPoint presentation should be given at either a morning report or noon conference. We’ve asked your program director to set aside a one 1-hour session for you to give this talk. Please review the PowerPoint thoroughly before presenting it, as there are a few slides with large yellow notes asking you to personalize it to your program and region. If you are unable to put anything into these slides, please delete the note &/or slide, where applicable. Give yourself at least 1 hour to go through the presentation yourself. The presentation itself should take 1 hour to give.

On the CD Hand-out for AAP SOMSRFT Obesity Advocacy Presentation Copies of this hand-out should be printed & given at your presentation. Please put it in the back or front of the room for residents, medical students & other practitioners to grab on their way in or out.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Resource Released a new Web site to assist leaders across the country in engaging local communities in the prevention of childhood obesity. Through the Web site you will discover leaders, allies and peers in your towns, states and on your issue to help you impact your work on policy, media, projects, research and organizing events. You will also have the ability to connect with potential partners. All this can be found in an up-to-date directory, called "Map of the Movement" at www.PreventObesity.net.

Coming SOON! Programmatic Changes - Tips for Practitioners on getting involved in your community This will be a brief PowerPoint put together which can serve several purposes – either as a PowerPoint to be given to your program at another time (perhaps for 15 minutes before another lecture) or as a reference for those interested in getting more involved with programmatic changes.
