One of his customers wanted a photo shoot so he hired Toni Frissell, and he spread the word about Pucci’s designs and they started to become popular. 9 NORMAN NORELL Norman Norell was born on April 20 th 1900 in Noblesville Indiana. From an early childhood Norman had the ambition to become a artist. After spending a short period at military school during world war I he decided it wasn’t right for him and decided to go into fashion design at the Pratt institute. In 1922 he joined the New York studio of Paramount Pictures, where he designed clothes for a series of actors in silent movies, including Gloria Swanson. Then he worked as a costume designer on Broadway. In 1943 he won a Coty Fashion Award and became a critic at the Pratt institute fashion department. Soon after Anthony Traina invited him to join him to form a fashion company, which was called Traina-Norell, with Anthony looking over the business side and Norell the fashion side. He launched chemise dresses, evening dresses, fur coats, fur slacks, and empire-line dresses. Norell was famous for his elegance and simplicity. Which completely contrasted Pucci’s ideas that were coming out in the same time period.
