1 The Associative Property of Multiplication Lesson: Introducing the Associative Property of Multiplication Unit: The Properties of Multiplication Third Grade (2 x 2) x 4 = 2 x (2 x 4) Mr. Paul Farbman March 16, 2015

2 The Associative Property in Addition
In addition, the associative property is all about grouping! Do these two ways of grouping give you the same sum? (5 + 3) (3+1) = (Farbman, 2015) (Farbman, 2015) 9 Yes! 9

3 The Associative Property in Multiplication
If you had to find the product in this problem, what strategies could you try? 3 x 20 Could you break one of the factors down into smaller factors? Yes!

4 Associative Property Steps
Step 1: Decide which factor you should break into smaller factors. 3 x 20 To make the problem easier, we should break down the larger factor. Step 2: Break down the larger factor into two smaller factors Ex: x 20 3 x (2 x 10)

5 Associative Property Steps
Step 3: We can change where the parenthesis are to make each problem even easier! Which would you rather solve? 3 x (2 x 10) or (3 x 2 ) x 10 Associative Property Steps Note: An associative property problem can start from this step! 3 x 20 6 x 10 60 60

6 Sample Problems Where should we put the brackets to solve? 4 x 3 x 1 = ? 5 x 2 x 7 = ? 4 x (3 x 1) = ? (5 x 2) x 7 = ? 4 x = 12 10 x 7 = 70

7 Associative Property of Multiplication Candy Example
Are 3 Groups of 1 Candy by 2 equal to 2 Groups of 3 Candies by 1? 3 x (1 x 2) = (3 x 1) x 2 2 1 (Farbman, 2015) 3 1 (Farbman, 2015) 6 Yes! 6

8 Practicing the Associative Property
