Your Travel Guide to Colonial America By Nancy Day Destiny Charron

Summary I read a book called, Your Travel Guide to Colonial America by Nancy Day. The genre is historical non- fiction. The book is about Colonial America and how the colonists lived, how they spent their money, how they get around, the local customs, their manners, what they wore, what they saw and did, the sports and recreation, were they stayed, what they ate, where to find souvenirs, how to stay safe and healthy, and who lived in Colonial America. If you want to find out all the interesting details about how they lived you will have to read the book! Now here are 8 interesting facts about Colonial America.

Interesting Fact 1 On page 24, I found a fact about the island of Manhattan in modern New York was settled by the Dutch in the early 1600s. They called their settlement New Amsterdam. The English took control in 1664 and renamed the island New York. By the 1700s, New York is a lively City, many visitors arrive in New York every tear from all over the world. The language there was Hebrew, Dutch, and English.

Interesting Fact 2 On page 32 I found a fact about the year 1704 you can read the Boston News-Letter. It is filled with news from Europe and records of ship arrivals and departures. These are of great interest to the colonists, who are waiting for word from “home” and for European goods they ordered. By the mid-1700s, you will find a number of weekly publications- at least one in each of leading colonies.

Interesting Fact 3 On page 40 I found a fact about how sometimes people are accused of witchcraft in the colonies, In Salem, Massachusetts, 1692. The village is in a uproar over charges of witchcraft against a number of citizens. The accused tend to be withdrawn, ugly, strange, or disliked. They also tend to be a woman without a husband. No one is above suspicion, however.

Interesting Fact 4 On page 43 I found a fact about the colonists that there personal hygiene is not exactly a high priority. Bathtubs are not invented yet. When men or boys talk about “washing” they mean a swim in a lake or stream. Woman and girls rarely bathe. People wash clothes once a month, or in some houses only once every three months.

Interesting Fact 5 On page 49 I found a fact about education. Education in Colonial America varies. Children in the southern colonies are less likely to attend school than children in other areas. Where plantations are spread out, schools are few and widely scattered. Wealthy children are often taught at home by a tutor. Sometimes several families get together and hire a teacher. Slaves and servants do not get a education.

Interesting Fact 6 On page 55 I found a fact that in colonial time the kids games were hopscotch, marbles, tag, kite-flying, swimming, fishing, or even just taking a walk. If the weather is bad, you may spin tops, read, or embroider the indoors. You would see woman as well as men playing cards and dice games.

Interesting Fact 7 On page 66 I found a fact about housewives and cooks begin preparing meals as early as four o’clock in the morning by hauling water and building up the fire. After the other members of the family have been at work for a couple hours, the women serve a large breakfast. The main meal of the day is ready at 2 o’clock in the afternoon.

Interesting Fact 8 On page 76 I found a fact about small pox. Smallpox devastates Native Americans, from 1617 to 1619. Smallpox kills 90% of the Native people of the Massachusetts Bay area. Another outbreak, in Connecticut in 1634, kills 95% of the Native Americans living along the Connecticut River.
