12 At a closer look… Draft 1 Draft 2 One day, mother Ann went to “Learning Park” with her son, John. He was ten years old and liked going out with his mother. “ Mum, I want to eat ice-cream. Can you buy one for me?” asked little John. “Ok, but you can’t go away. You must wait here, ok?” When Ann was buying ice-cream for John, John ran away and got lost. Ann was worried about her son and felt scared. Next, she found her son near the sea. “Son...Son! Where are you going to? I am worried about you. You can’t go away any more, ok?” Ann was crying. “Ok.” said little John. However, everyone didn’t know he was not Ann’s son. He was an alien, called Bob. He came from another planet. He was a killer, he liked killing people, but no one could catch him, because he was an alien and had a special power. However, there was one thing that can make Bob die. It’s “love”. Love could kill all aliens. Then, Bob said, “He..heee… Ann, no one will save you. Your honey son has died…. Hahahhaa!” “Mum, I will save you!” John was taking a special gun. “Oh, no! It is love. I will die!” Bob cried. “Boom”, John shot Bob. Finally, Bob died. John saved all people. He and Ann went home happily. One day, mother Ann went to “Learning Park” with her son, John. 14 14 What led to the remarkable improvement?

15 Strategies at teaching and learning level  Setting clear teaching objectives and assessment criteria for writing tasks Explaining assessment criteria before students write Introducing formative assessment practices More feedback from teacher and/or students at an early stage Collating students’ work in writing files Reminding students to review the compliments and recommendations in previous work before starting a new task Compliment : Good use of dialogues Teacher’s feedback on the previous story writing task kept in the writing file Recommendation: Write short paragraphs to highlight the change in time!

16 That is not the end… Teacher’s detailed feedback You can change the “love” gun into something else  do something very difficult to save his mother to show his love to his mother. That could be more touching.

17 Final work

18 Final work One day, mother Ann went to “Learning Park” with her son, John. He was ten years old and liked going out with his mother. “ Mum, I want to eat ice-cream. Can you buy one for me?” asked little John. “Ok, but you can’t go away. You must wait here, ok?” When Ann was buying ice-cream for John, John ran away and got lost. I will die!” Bob cried. “Boom”, John shot Bob. Finally, Bob died. John saved all people. He and Ann went home happily. Draft 2 Changed to a touching happy ending “Oh, no! It is love. I will die.” Bob was crying, “Don’t shoot me. I was very sad because no one plays with me. I was very solitary, so I want to have a mother. Although I am a killer, I am very nice. I kill someone who is bad.” John and Ann felt Bob was poor, so he brought him home and played with Bob happily.  empathetic characters
