Utilizing Web Searches and Portaportal Presented by Barbara Dertinger and Mark Saunders with special thanks to Ozzie Brown

Search Engines Software programs that use “spiders” to search web pages for words included in the search item.

Spiders Spiders are programs that “crawl” through the information on the internet looking for links and adding the information to the search engine’s database.

Meta Search Engines Meta Search Engines run searches simultaneously on several search engines using the terms you typed in.

Web Directories Organize Web sites by subject Usually maintained by humans and not software Usually much smaller than search engines’ databases

Search Tricks Enclose keywords in quotations “ “ -limits the search to exact matches in the databases Boolean Logic: AND includes both words in the search Ex: Apple AND fruit OR- searches for sites with either term Ex: Apple OR fruit AND NOT- excludes the terms Ex: Apple AND NOT fruit Use capital letters for most search engines

Favorite Search Engines: www.dogpile.com www.ask.com www.dogpile.com www.ask.com

This is a web site if you want to view out dated web pages. www.archive.org

An Web-based Linking Tool

Portaportal What is it? –Web page that contains links to other pages –A “portable” “portal” to other sites –A server based book-marking utility

What is a server based book-marking utility? A book marking utility acts like your favorites or bookmarks menu. It gives you a place to keep references to your favorite websites. Server based gives portaportal the advantage over those. It means your bookmark information is actually stored on our computers. Now you can access it from any web browser on any computer, anywhere, so when you get a good link while away from home, you can just store it and have it always around.

Portaportal What can I do with it? –Create a review page for students –Create a resource page for your department –Create a “fun page” for kids that are done early on another project
