Lee's parents want Luke to pretend to be killed because the real Lee died when he was trying to deliver guns and ammo to third children. He was delivering the guns so that they could fight for them selves.

Lee’s parents wanted Luke to pretend he was dead because the real Lee was trying to get the guns and weapons to the other children which was illegal.
