Football Football was the most popular sport in the 1950’s The best football player of this time was Frank Gifford In 1958 Frank won the Pro Bowl MVP He played for the New York Giants

Baseball In the 1950’s baseball wasn’t the most popular sport but still a lot of people were into the sport Jackie Robinson was one of the most famous players from this time, He played for the Dodgers He was the first African American player to play in the MLB He had the most stolen bases in the league and was named Most Valuable Player in 1950

Basketball In the 1950’s basketball was starting to become a lot more popular One of the best players from the 1950’s was Bob Cousy He played for the Boston Celtics

Boxing In the 1950’s boxing was starting to become a lot less popular Many people still enjoyed it though One of the best boxers from the era was Joe Louis winning the heavy weight title in 1950

Bowling The advent of the automatic pin setting machine made bowling start to pick up mass appeal in the 1950’s Bowling shoes were also introduced The 1950’s was the big boom for bowling

Tennis Woman’s tennis was becoming very popular in the 1950’s Althea Gibson is the first black person to win a tennis Grand Slam title in 1956 Althea becomes the top- ranked women's tennis player with Wimbledon and U.S. Championships under her belt.

Kevlar ● Invented by Stephanie Kwolek ● Made by spinning fiber from liquid crystalline solutions ● Originally developed to replace steel in radial tires ● Today it is used in a wide variety of things ● Mainly used in bullet-proof vests, but also used in canoes, bike tires, sails, and tank armor

The ATM (Automated Teller Machine) ● Don Wetzel is credited for the invention ● Took 5 million dollars to make ● The first machines were off-line so money wasn't instantly withdrawn from the account ● Only credit card holders with good banking records were allowed an ATM card ● First one began dispensing on Sept. 2 nd 1969 only weeks after Armstrong stepped on the moon ● Made it easier for people to get their money rather than stand in lines at the bank

Astroturf ● Invented by Donald Elbert, James M, and Robert Wright ● Originally called “Chemgrass” ● First major usage was in the Houston Astrodome stadium ● Soon after most of the major sports started adopting it as their artificial grass ● To Most of the old product is obsolete however they have invented new products based of newer technologies ● this day Astroturf is still used as artificial grass

Lava lamp ● Invented by Edwin Walker in 1963 ● Nicknamed the Astro lamp ● Contained blobs of colored wax in a glass casing ● Used for novelty purposes and decorations ● These have proven to be dangerous fire hazards – especially home made ones ● In 2004 a man died from heating one over the stove resulting in an explosion of glass shards and molten liquid

Cochlear implant ● Invented by Alessandro Volt ● AKA the hearing aid or bionic ear ● Helps those with hearing problems ● Provides a sense of sound and helps those with a damaged auditory system ● As of 2010 around 220,000 people are still benefiting from this amazing invention

Bar code scanner ● Invented by Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver ● First codes weren't rectangular but instead circular ● First used in 1966 ● The first company to start producing bar coding equipment was the American company monarch marking ● Later evolved into the U.P.C ( Universal product code) ● The U.S still uses this today

Kent State University Shootings May 4, 1970 – four students were killed when National Guardsmen opened fire during anti-war protests and demonstrations on campus

Anti-Vietnam March April 19 – 24, 1971 – Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW) led over 500,000 demonstrators on a protest march in Washington D.C. 125,000 people in San Francisco also led an anti-Vietnam protest

Watergate Scandal June 17, 1972 – break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C. by members of Nixon's administration and a former CIA member, who were informally called "The Plumbers“. They were arrested at 2:30 a.m. after trying to bug the offices

Roe v. Wade January 22, 1973 – court decision legalizes abortion; overturned all state and federal laws outlawing or restricting abortion

Richard Nixon Resigns August 9, 1974 – Richard Nixon, facing impeachment charges, is forced to resign; the only U.S. president to resign from office. Vice president Gerald R. Ford assumes position as the 38 th president. Ford later pardons Nixon of all charges related to Watergate Nixon's Resignation Speech

Vietnam War Ends April 30, 1975 – the war concludes as the last American soldiers leave Saigon as it falls to the communists

United States Bicentennial July 4, 1976 – The country commemorates the 200 th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with a spectacular bicentennial celebration

Jonestown November 9, 1978 – American religious cult leader Jim Jones and 900 Peoples Temple followers died in a mass suicide in Jonestown, Guyana

Iran Hostage Crisis November 4, 1979 – Iranian militant students seize the U.S. embassy in Tehran capturing 66 hostages and setting off an intense standoff that lasted 444 days
