7 Today—2014 2014 Lincy Institute Commissions a Brookings Institution Analysis of Federal Funding for a UNLV Medical School Conclusion: A UNLV Medical School would Add Over 50 Million in Federal Funding Within a Decade of Founding a Medical School

8 Today—2014 A Just Published Brookings Institution Metropolitan Policy Program Metro Monitor Shows:  Las Vegas Health Services Maintain a 0.64 “Location Quotient” as of the Second Quarter of 2014  During both the Recession and Recovery Health Service Jobs Grew 10.8% and 11.6% Respectively

9 What is a Location Quotient? A Location Quotient is Defined as the Metro Area Share of Total Jobs in a Given Industry Divided by the Comparable Share Nationwide. Values Greater than One Demonstrate a Greater than the National Average Share of Jobs in that Industry, Indicating Specialization

10 So Where is LV in 2014? Leisure and Hospitality—LQ = 3.01 Construction—LQ = 1.17 Trade, Trans., Utilities—LQ = 1.00 Prof. and Bus. Service—LQ = 1.00 Health Services—LQ = 0.64 Education—LQ = 0.53 LV is Missing “Eds and Meds”

11 Eds and Meds Are Often Overrepresented in Regional Economies Above 2 Million Residents Because of Scale Most Large Regions Have a Carnegie “Research Very/High Activity” University and ALL have Allopathic Medical Schools That Includes Orlando

12 Las Vegas 2013 Population In 2013 (July 1 Census Estimate) :  Las Vegas (Clark, NV) “Metropolitan Statistical Area” had 2,027,868 People Ranked 31 st in U.S.  Las Vegas NV, AZ (Clark, NV; Nye, NV; Mohave, AZ) “Combined Statistical Area” had 2,273,195 Million People Ranked 27 th in U.S.  Net In-Migration of Over 50K 2011-13
