6.  That is exactly what the Klan did to African Americans.  The Klu Klux Klan’s main goal was to keep blacks from pursuing the rights they had gained after the Civil War.  Review: What rights did the African Americans gain through Reconstruction?

7.  Remember, primary sources are from the actual time period and secondary sources are written after the time period.  When we are looking at sources sometimes we have to infer, (background knowledge + clues from the source), to find the meaning.  Let’s look at a primary source to infer information about the Klu Klux Klan.

13.  The Klu Klux Klan was motivated to keep African Americans from exercising their newly gained rights.  They wanted to protect “white supremacy” and thought the African Americans would threaten their race.  They also wanted to protect the women and children from the African American militia.
