 As farmers would go off to serve in the army, patricians would bring in their slaves to do the farming  Patricians then found that the slaves would work more, or the same amount, for less pay  Many slaves were uneducated, which often meant that the only possible job they could do was farming

 Slavery was essential to the Roman economy Due to…. -Cheap Labor Costs -A surplus of Slaves available -Many were uneducated, so owners could trick them into selfish deals  Surplus of slaves, but lack of resources meant that only the wealthy could afford to keep their slaves alive

 Many Romans could not pay taxes, and then couldn’t afford essentials to survive  With lack of resources then led to many people applying for welfare

 Outsourcing generally occurs in the technological field  Because of longer school hours, and an education comes first practice, countries like India and China are getting a lot of U.S. business

 Outsourcing is not only on the rise in the technological field, but in the auto industry as well  Leading U.S. banks have recently outsourced over 5 billion dollars in back projects to India  HP also laid off 30, 000 workers, to ship more jobs to China

 The internet has helped to make outsourcing very popular. With the effortless click of a mouse, any person with internet access can outsource, or start a call center.  Also, the environmental restrictions are very different in other countries than in the U.S. While companies may not be able to release certain waste products, they can then outsource part of their company to another country, and release their waste there.

 Both Rome and the U.S. outsource, or gave slaves other people’s jobs, because the labor costs were much cheaper, for the same amount of labor

Expert: Sarah Murphy; Marketing for the Shedd Aquarium, in Chicago, IL  1. What is your standpoint on American outsourcing? I believe outsourcing is important for the free-market to work. If it is the best way to bring down costs and increase profit than you should be able to do it.  2. Has any company you have worked for ever outsourced jobs? Yes. The organization (Shedd Aquarium) was looking to lower costs and increase profit. The senior management group looked at departments that were outside the core competencies and determined that the retail store operation, food service and building operations would be more efficiently run by outside organizations who are experts in those areas.  3. If so, how beneficial is outsourcing for your company's profit? Outsourcing the stores and the food service turned out to provide major savings in expenses and significant increase in profits for the organization. The building operations after 3 years returned to an in-house function because of the specialized needs of the aquarium.

 4. With unemployment on the rise, do you think there is any hope that some outsourced jobs will become purely American again? It's possible but, the challenges is to find and retrain unemployed folks to meet the needs of existing and future job market. The US education system is struggling to provide the basic education to ensure the US workforce is strong for the future. According to the book Waiting for Superman "in 2020 there will be 123 million high-skill jobs to fill----and fewer than 50 million Americans qualified to fill them." If we don't have the skilled people for the jobs companies will look worldwide to meet the needs and keep costs low.  5. Do you think that we could have saved to Roman republic's crisis of slavery taking Roman jobs? No. I think that the slavery taking the jobs was a part of a bigger issue of political corruption, greed and lack of overall leadership to help the people of Rome care for themselves and their community.

I believe that we could easily have helped Romans solve parts of problems, but not the whole thing. I believe this, because Rome and the U.S. faced (are facing) the same problems. If we are still learning how to solve some of these issues today, then perhaps we could have shared with them some of our ideas. As we have learned, there is no such thing as a perfect society. So even the U.S. still has problems today.
