O AK R IDGE N ATIONAL L ABORATORY U. S. D EPARTMENT OF E NERGY Sustainability at ORNL 2001 - Private Funded Project chose US Green Building Council’s LEED TM system to incorporate sustainability Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED TM ) - a DOE/EPA funded program DOE Funded projects followed suit and FY02 ORNL Performance measures were tied to LEED TM criteria (LEED TM “Like”)

O AK R IDGE N ATIONAL L ABORATORY U. S. D EPARTMENT OF E NERGY LEED TM Project Implementation LEED TM Training Design Engineers Project Managers Construction Manager LEED TM Certified Professional One subcontractor Three staff scheduled to obtain
9
O AK R IDGE N ATIONAL L ABORATORY U. S. D EPARTMENT OF E NERGY LEED TM Lessons Learned Costs Sustainable items DON’T always cost too much!! Project Implementation Specific LEED TM Meetings Lengthy interpretations discussions Additional AE and contractor effort Additional M&O management & oversight LEED TM certified professionals i.e. “experts” Recent project example - “Expert” contract of $110K with no real value added to the project.
10
O AK R IDGE N ATIONAL L ABORATORY U. S. D EPARTMENT OF E NERGY LEED TM Lessons Learned Documentation Requirements Additional calculations and construction submittals above normal Record keeping - paper trail, feels like NQA1 Existing ORNL Standards not seamless with LEED TM - Need sustainable integration Master Design Criteria Construction Specifications Standards
11
O AK R IDGE N ATIONAL L ABORATORY U. S. D EPARTMENT OF E NERGY LEED TM Lessons Learned LEED TM “Like” or “Certifiable” Confusion with entire team as to expectations and deliverables required. Campus Applicability Green power contract: 1 vs 2 years Alternate fuel: ethanol for Government vs public vehicles Alternate transportation: intra-campus shuttle vs mass transit Light Pollution: no property lines
12
O AK R IDGE N ATIONAL L ABORATORY U. S. D EPARTMENT OF E NERGY LEED TM Lessons Learned Learning Curve and Familiarity Lack of local/regional knowledge or tools. local A/Es not up to speed Contractors ORNL staff had limited in-house LEED TM expertise. Some point scoring unclear -interpretation problems, i.e. lots of discussion no resolution. Traditional cost-schedule-scope vs long term sustainability goals

O AK R IDGE N ATIONAL L ABORATORY U. S. D EPARTMENT OF E NERGY ORNL Sustainable Rating Tool Overview SUSTAINABLE MEASURES TOOL AND RATING
14
O AK R IDGE N ATIONAL L ABORATORY U. S. D EPARTMENT OF E NERGY ORNL Sustainable Rating Tool Overview Used established guidelines… USGBC LEED TM Minnesota’s Design Guide Corps of Engineers - SpiRiT Incorporated ORNL “best management practices” with a focus on energy efficiency. Incorporated graded approach to documentation. Established responsibilities.
15
O AK R IDGE N ATIONAL L ABORATORY U. S. D EPARTMENT OF E NERGY ORNL Sustainable Rating Tool Overview What SMART Does… Reinforces and enhances ORNL’s commitment to building “green”. Adaptive to ORNL campus environment. Assigns roles, responsibilities, and subject matter experts. Minimizes additional documentation

22
O AK R IDGE N ATIONAL L ABORATORY U. S. D EPARTMENT OF E NERGY Summary ORNL is committed to the concept of sustainability. ORNL operations are addressed. Use SMART when certification is not required/desired. Use LEED TM when certification is desired. SMART will evolve with use and experience - a living document.
