NETHERLANDS Gaļinas prezentation

Coat of arms

In the 17th century, red replaced the orange as a flag color, because the orange dye used on the flag was unstable, and turned red after exposure to the sun. Netherland sometimes is named Orange state. Legend tell about once upon the time lived one prince that eager loved oranges, because peoples named him the Orange Prince and orange color associated with country. At one time this tricolor flag was orange, white and blue, as those were the livery colors of William of Orange, a Dutch prince. William III - Prince of orange

7My God, I pray thee, save me And threaten to enslave me, Thy trusted servant true. O Father, do not sanction Their wicked, foul design, Don't let them wash their hands in This guiltless blood of mine. Netherland anthem is very old, difficult and long. Anthem consist from very old and abstruse words – though school cildrens must learn that words learn by heart. In some schools childrens can learn only one verse. Dutch national anthem is the oldest anthem in the world. The melody of the anthem is based on a French soldiers' song, which was popular around 1569 The origins of the lyrics are not clear. Hence some believe the lyrics of the Dutch national anthem were the creation of a one poem poet-like person who then disappeared from history. I like this verse:

The Netherlands is a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy. Quien Beatriks

Netherland sometimes is named Holland Though Holland is one of Netherland provinces The country's name is derived from the Dutch word 'neder' meaning 'low'.

The tulip has come to be a loved symbol of the Netherlands. Many tourists visit the country just to see the bright coloured flower and the astonishing view over the bulb fields. Tulip is not a native Dutch flower, they came to the Netherlands from another part of the world It was first cultivated by the Turks as early as 1000 AD, The flower was introduced in Western Europe and the Netherlands in the 17th century by Carolus Clusius, a famous biologist from Vienna.

No car Bicycle is main transport in the Netherlands.

Most part of country lies below sea level. That places are so low-lying that it would be subject to inundation if it were not for the surrounding sand dunes and dikes and the regular pumping of excess water. An area surrounded by dikes where the water table can be controlled is called a polder. The lowest point is 6.7 m below mean sea level (northeast of Rotterdam).

In February 1953 the Netherlands faced disaster when the dikes were breached by hurricane-force wind and exceptionally high spring tides. The flood came in the night without warning, a fateful combination of freak high tides and gale-force winds that killed 1835 people. Almost 200 000 hectares of land was swamped, 3000 homes and 300 farms destroyed, and 47 000 heads of cattle drowned. It was The Netherlands' worst disaster for 300 years. Flooding caused by storm surges were nothing new to the Netherlands, but this time the nation was stunned by the extent of a disaster unparalleled for centuries.
