Thickness of Aluminum Foil Mr. Strickland, Science Instructor

Objective In this lab, we will practice collecting data, measuring, and organizing information. In this lab, we will practice collecting data, measuring, and organizing information. We will also utilize mathematical formulas to determine the thickness of a piece of aluminum foil. We will also utilize mathematical formulas to determine the thickness of a piece of aluminum foil.

Materials Aluminum Foil (2 brands) Aluminum Foil (2 brands) Balance Balance Ruler Ruler Scissors Scissors Calculator Calculator

Procedure 1. Using the scissors and the ruler, cut a rectangular piece of aluminum foil. 2. Determine the area of the piece of foil. ( A = l x w = _____ cm 2 ) 3. Using the balance, determine the mass of the aluminum foil. *For best results, ball the foil up before putting it on the balance. 4. Repeat the procedure for the other brand.

Analysis (*You do NOT have to write the questions!) 1. Using the density of aluminum, calculate the volume of each piece of aluminum foil.  density of aluminum = 2.699 g/cm 3  Density = Mass / Volume, so Volume = Mass / Density

Analysis (cont.) (*You do NOT have to write the questions!) 2. Using the formula for volume of a rectangle, calculate the thickness (or height) of each piece of aluminum foil.  Volume = length x width x height, so Height = volume / (length x width) Height = volume / (length x width) 3. Convert the thickness of each brand to meters (m), kilometers (km), and millimeters (mm). 4. Which brand is the thickest?

Summary Write one paragraph describing the objective of the lab, the materials used, a summary of the procedure, and an explanation of the results.
