1 Do Now Activity! What did both Parsons and Durkheim use as an analogy for society? What are the four prerequisites that Parsons stated were for society to satisfy? What is meant by the term Latency? What does Neo-Marxists believe? What is Althusser’s concept of relative autonomy? How much can you remember? 5 Symbolic Interactionism Mead (1934) Blumer (1962) 1. The symbol – world contains millions of objects and people. Everything cannot be seen as unique, categorise things into groups with a name or symbol. ‘Terrorists’, ‘Women’, ‘Trees’ 2. The self – people must know who they are within the world of symbols and meaning. We need to be able to see ourselves through the eyes of others. Blumer suggest the notion of who we are appears in childhood. 3. The interaction – most important is the point when symbol and self come together. Moment when we consider how others react to our actions, when we take in their viewpoint. All parties must interact to construct the situation.

6 Goffman and the Dramaturgical Approach People’s interaction is a number of settings were analysed by Goffman. He was influenced by Social Interactionism. The Dramaturgical element, explores how people percieve themselves and how we set out to present an image of ourselves. Goffman states that people set out a series of strategies to deal with people and these are constantly changing and adapting. He states that we are all like actors in a loosely scripted play in which we interpret their roles.
