2 Drug Rehabilitation : o where people go, or what people participate in when trying to get off of a drug. o The process of rehabilitation involves psychological and medical issues. o Most addicts have a psychiatrist to help with withdrawal. Rehabilitation Centers: o The patients in rehabilitation centers are taught how to live a drug-free life. o Most centers require their patients to socialize with the other people for support, and to keep their minds away from drugs. o They are encouraged not to keep in contact with people who still use the substances. Types of Rehabilitation: o Out-patient o Support groups o Care centers (Rehab center) o Sober House

3 T he d r ug a dd i c t i on is h a r m i ng t he p e r s on The addiction is harming those around him Impairs their normal daily life The addict has built up an emotional wall between himself and everyone around him People want to get rid of their addiction Recklessness- The drug addict engages in risky behavior without thinking of the consequences The person wants to return to a normal life

4 The following steps must be followed to become clean: o De-tox o Counseling o Aftercare

5 o The person should stay under medical care during de-tox so they don’t relapse o The first and most important step in rehabilitation

6 o The process of cleansing the body of all the toxins related to the drug o Withdrawal- The painful symptoms that occur when someone abruptly stops using a drug. o While this isn't usually harmful to the body, it can be very painful and stressful due to withdrawal symptoms. o Can take between several days to a couple months

7 Normal Side Effects: Depression-feeling sad Anxiety-feeling of worrying and nervousness Sweat and Chills Mood Swings-abrupt change in mood Restlessness-inability to rest Difficulty Breathing Nausea and vomiting- throwing up, illness Dangerous Side Effects: Heart Attack- lack of drugs could cause the heart to fail Seizures-a sudden series of uncontrolled movements

8 o Purpose: find the cause of the drug addiction and establish solutions.

9 Group Individual o Gives the addict the ability to socialize with other people that are recovering also. o Helps build support and makes the person feel more comfortable. o Provides one-on-one session with a trained counselor. o Gives the same support as group counseling in a different way. o More personal.

10 Last step in rehabilitation o Makes the transition from a drug oriented life to a normal one easier o Several different types of aftercare programs. o They all have the same goal: To give the patient all of the knowledge they need to live a sober, drug free life

11 WWithdrawal Symptoms YYou leave your old life behind (all of your friends, family, etc.) AAn addict relapses into their addiction

12 Addicts learn to deal with the consequences of their actions Rebuilds self-esteem and self-image Able to live a drug free life. And most importantly, most addicts who leave are able to start a new life
