2 9 th grade Registration Overview 1. Pick up registration folder containing registration form, teacher recommendation form, and instruction sheet. 2. Complete pink registration form. 3. Return registration materials by Wednesday, January 28 th, to your career quest class. 4. Registration via Skyward will occur in career quest class on that date.

6 Math Selections Refer the course guide to view the math sequences. Progress (or lack of) in the next 3 months may influence your math course selection. You can adjust your selection by contacting your MHS counselor prior to June 1. Students taking algebra this year who have consistently earned less than a grade of C- should consider retaking algebra in grade 9. Strong algebra skills are the foundation of high school math success.

7 Algebra 1 R or H Skills for Success Minimum of 15-30 minutes per day outside of class for each assignment given. Assertiveness to ask questions when you encounter difficulty. Patience to do substantial repetition of review problems to prepare for tests. Willingness to participate in a feedback loop (retakes).

8 Geometry Honors Skills for Success Candidates should have earned an A/A- in algebra 1. Be comfortable with challenge and frustration, it is part of this course. Have time in your schedule when you can get extra help such as a study hall or before or after school. Commit at least half an hour to homework for this class each night. Be able to focus on developing your skills, not just on getting an A.

9 Advanced Placement (AP) in Grade 9  Nationally recognized program offered by the College Board that allows high school students to pursue college level coursework and earn college credit while still in high school.  MHS uses AP as it’s primary vehicle to prepare students for entry and success in the post high school environment.  Our AP brochure explains more about the AP philosophy and curriculum. Students may take AP classes at any point in their high school career.  Decision to take AP depends on strengths, weaknesses, and progression of academic maturity.

10 Social Science Selection US Hist & Am Gov R 301 is a regular level American Government class that will challenge the average student. Advanced Placement Hist Am Gov & Pol H 302 is a rigorous, in-depth survey of government that is designed to prepare students for their first AP exam in May of 2016. Students must have a grade of an A or B in global studies along with a teacher recommendation. US History & Am Gov Foundations 400 must be taken with English I Essentials and is for students who are developing their reading and writing skills and require a slower pace and more structure in the classroom.

11 English Selections English I 401 is a regulars literature composition course designed to challenge the average student. English I 402 is an honors course for students with strong interest and motivation in literature and writing. English I Essentials 400 must be taken with US History & Am Gov Foundations and is for students who are developing their reading and writing skills and require a slower pace and more structure in the classroom.

12 English 1 Honors Skills for Success Willingness to write multiple drafts of lengthy papers without whining. Initiative to contact instructor for direction or feedback when needed. Self confidence to accept criticism and use it constructively to improve your writing. Motivation to read and process literature independently. Organization to work on lengthy projects over several weeks.

13 Biology Honors Skill for Success Organizational Skills sufficient enough to keep handouts, notes, labs accessible. Willingness to take notes motivation to improve. Self-discipline to review these notes regularly. Self-discipline to read a textbook to prepare for the next day’s lecture. Test preparation over multiple days. Consistent, complete work on lab write ups. Willingness to participate in a feedback loop (retakes).

15 Summer School Registration Summer school registration will be through Skyward Student Access. Registration will open on Friday, January 23 rd at 6:00pm and close on Tuesday, January 27 th at 5:59pm. Classes will fill on a first come, first serve basis. After January 27 th, there will be a waiting list in guidance for classes that are filled.

16 Summer School Registration Cont. Do not register on the pink card for classes you intend to take in Summer School. Write summer school classes in the box on the registration card. Classes will begin June 15th and conclude July 24th. You may only miss 5 days of summer school. Summer school options include: Fit for Life, Healthy Choices, Computer Applications H, AP Prep, Tailor Made Math, and Food Around the World If you drop a summer school class and it is a required class for graduation, you may need to adjust your fall schedule.
