2 Essential Question  What strategies could we use to stop and prevent drug use in our community?

3 Bath Salts  Designer drugs that are made to imitate the effects of other drugs.  Manufactured to simulate the effects of stimulants such as amphetamine and cocaine.  The white crystals resemble the legal bathing products  They chemically have nothing to do with actual bath salts.

4 Bath Salts  1. In 2009, “bath salts” started to become increasingly present in the United States via China and India.  2. Two years later, there was a noticeable rise in crime associated with “bath salts” in New York City.  3. A student at Rutgers University was beaten and murdered by long-time her boyfriend who was high on bath salts. This drug has been linked to self-mutilation, violence, hallucinations and extreme paranoia.  4. Increase in bath salt-related hospital visits; The most disturbing incidents included a man who broke into a Pennsylvania monastery and stabbed a priest and a West Virginia woman who tore off her own skin.

5 Bath Salts  5. The DEA moves to ban bath salts in September 2011.  6. In the same year, a West Virginia man claiming to be high on bath salts reportedly stabbed a neighbor’s goat (which belonged to a 4-year-old child) to death while wearing women's underwear. A pornographic magazine was lying near the pygmy goat.  7. In Florida, rumors that Rudy Eugene was high on bath salts when he chewed off the face of another man. Though speculation is still in the air regarding if he was actually high on the drug, though his behavior definitely drew more attention to the drug.  8. In May 2012, bath salts are banned along with synthetic marijuana.
