What is Respiration? We need to breathe. Organs of the respiratory system. Breathing air. Motion of breathing.

Respiration is the act of taking air into the lungs and pushing it out.

We breathe automatically because our body needs oxygen from the air to stay alive.

The RESPIRATORY SYSTEM has these main parts: Nasal Cavity Trachea Bronchi Bronchioles Lungs Alveoli

When we breathe, the air: Enters the body through the nose or the mouth. Travels down through the trachea (windpipe). Goes into the lungs through two tubes called bronchi. They divide into smaller tubes called bronchioles. These ones end in tiny air sacs called alveoli.

When we breathe in, the lungs fill with air. When we breathe out, the air goes out and the lungs empty.

Breathing in: our diaphragm moves down and our ribs move out.

Breathing out: our diaphragm moves up and our ribs move back.

Our lungs are like to sponges full of tiny air tubes.
