1 SLEEVE Discussion Ianos Schmidt – U.Iowa Ugur Akgun – U.Iowa John Neuhaus – U.Iowa Lucien Cremaldi - U.Miss David R Winn – Fairfield And help from many 30 Oct 2010 Agun, Winn

2 Summary Tyvek, Teflon reflectors – Large body HEP experience. reflectivity >95% ~HEM. BUT: high resistive/dielectric strength, semi-specular. CMS operational tests simplest Tyvek and Teflon sleeve mockups: signal >93% of HEM signal, and low background from the sleeve itself (<10% of previous sleeve). See Taylan Yetkin talks. Test Data: radiosource, HV, n &  raddam (see U.Akgun talk) Tests: Tyvek, Gore DRP teflon v. good HEM replacement.

3 Sleeve Drawing – I.Schmidt GOAL: Reduce Sleeve Length to ~6 mm And Reduce internal Telescoping length To minimum: This is OK!

4 Sleeves Ianos Schmidt - Iowa A). Round Tyvek sleeve (For PMT’s presently used in HF) – kapton tape. B). Tyvek in adhesive lined polyolefin shrink tubing shaped by shrinking over mandrel. (concept worked well but adhesive glows under UV). C). White polyolefin shrink tubing. Investigating tapes, glues, snaps; square round adapters -heat-shrink, plastic pre-forms/armatures, separate square, round collars. (Iowa, Miss, Fairfield) ABC

5 Candidates TYVEK 1025 D(**)TYVEK inkjet sheet TYVEK 1073 DTYVEK inkjet banner TYVEK 1085 DTYVEK TY31 TYVEK 1056 DTYVEK cc sleeve TYVEK 1443 RGORE DRP -- 3 mm TYVEK 1079GORE DRP -- 0.5 mm TYVEK Vivia% Cotton paper Polyethelene (HDPE)Teflon Baselines: Tyvek 1085D Gore DRP 0.5

6 Teflon vs Tyvek: Comments Teflon: slightly more UV(?)-Vis reflective; Slightly less Cerenkov than Tyvek. Less rad-hard; Activation/Fluorine evolutes; Reactions: F(n,  /  /T/p, nn,..); F( , n/e/..)+  ; Corona islands (10 18  -cm); Gore Reflector seem to scintillate or Cerenkov on back side; Thickness a problem; Expensive. Comments Tyvek: possible >Cerenkov; less specular in base-type than Teflon; No issues of neutron interaction; Very Radhard. Bottom Line: Down Select Tyvek (?)

7 Sleeve Background Tasks: Ru 106 source – more energetic – Redo beta light generation tests, but with…. Real sleeve prototypes: square or round for R7600; Gore DRP teflon, and tyvek –. Need R7600+ Base: Fairfield, Mississippi Re-Measure tickets as function of angle 90 o -1 0 Neutron response F(n,x), C(n,x) Test Beam: Feb 16-22 FNAL M-Test Beam – Need time x task and team members

8 Plans T> 02/11 (Raddam: Co60, n completed! See U.Akgun talks). n-interaction tests: neutron source CERN, Fermi, ? – F 19 (n,α)N 16 + 5-7 MeV , F 19 (n,  )F 20 + 1.6 MeV , F 19 (n,p)O 19 + 0.2, 1.3 MeV , …….(n+p->p+n? gamma?) Beam Tests - February: – a) Direct compare teflon vs tyvek vs HEM sleeves on C- light(bundle, calo proto) through HEM guide -> R7600. – b) Muon HEM+sleeve scan: ~0 0 ->120 o Forming into sleeves: Procedures & Shapes – Glues (ex:magnet epoxies), tapes, plastic armatures (mylar, kapton +adhesives) – for no Scintillation!

9 Sleeve Summary Gore DRP, Tyvek Sleeve Materials for Downselect – Low to negligible ionizing-background light generation – Adaptable to square (if necessary – downselect!) – Preserves Signal (at worst 93%). – HV-safe for HFPMT at 6mm. R7600 in test next 2 months. Point Designs Sleeves progress per loaded schedule. Fasteners/adhesives for fabrication under study. Beam Tests February: Gore DRP-Tyvek DownSelect n-signal/activation next 3 months (if Gore DRP). Preliminary planning for manufacture and install
