Federalist Federalist – wanted a strong central government. They felt that it was needed in order to conduct business and diplomacy with other nations, protection, and to minimize damage caused by rival factions. Anti-Federalist Anti-Federalist – were afraid that a central government that had too much power may become tyrannical. They want a Bill of Rights to act as a “parchment barrier.” They wanted certain rights guaranteed to the people and individual.

1 st Amendment freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

2 nd Amendment regulated Militia, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms

3 rd Amendment Quartering of Soldiers

4 th Amendment unreasonable searches and seizures

5 th Amendment Grand Jury indictment, Double Jeopardy, Self- incrimination, deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law, private property be taken for public use without just compensation.

6 th Amendment Speedy and public trial, impartial jury, be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation, confronted with the witnesses against him, and witnesses for, assistance of counsel for defense

7 th Amendment Law suits exceeding $20 shall be tried in a court of law

8 th Amendment Excessive bail or fines, cruel and unusual punishments inflicted

9 th Amendment You can’t use something in the Constitution to deny other rights in the Constitution

10 th Amendment States have rights too. If it doesn’t state it in the Constitution that it is a Federal right, it falls to the states
