Transportation Personal Finance

Public Transportation Where you live has an impact on public transportation options. ▫If you happen to live in the city, you have many options; suburbs some options, rural areas usually have only one option. Public transportation has many benefits, including: ▫Saves energy and other resources ▫Usually cheaper than driving. Public transportation falls into two categories: ▫Urban transportation ▫Intercity transportation

Urban transportation Mass transit in the city often includes buses and light rail systems, which are electronically powered railroad cars that operate at street level. The cost to use mass transit is usually lower than driving a car. ▫Buses and rail systems help keep pollution down and traffic light. Commuters are people who have to travel a sizeable distance between work and home. Their options are usually a little more limited but buses, subways, and trains can often provide them a service.

Intercity Public Transportation This type of transportation connects cities to each other. ▫What are some of the ways that you can travel to Chicago? These types of Transportation include buses (Greyhound), subways, trains, and planes. Which one is the cheapest?

Private Transportation Private transportation is for your personal use, not the public’s. ▫This includes bicycles, motorcycles, and cars. Pros: ▫Convenient ▫Yours, nobody else’s Cons: ▫Expensive ▫Stress

Bicycles Bicycles are great for short distance travel. They are cheap and good for your health and the environment. There are different types of bikes: ▫Road bikes are lightweight with smooth tires. They are built for speed. ▫Mountain bikes have sturdy frames and better brakes. ▫Hybrids can switch between the two.

Motorcycles They are typically cheaper to buy and operate than a car. ▫Many motorcycles travel more than 50 miles on one gallon of gas. However they do come with drawbacks: ▫Safety ▫High Insurance ▫Need good weather to operate Other options may include scooters and mopeds.

Cars Cars are the top choice for private transportation. They are immediately available and get you to your destination in comfort and all kinds of weather. There are also a lot of options under this category (luxury, vans, SUVs, sedans, compact) The biggest drawback of a car is that they are expensive to own and operate.
