1 Ireland’s Natural features NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS

2 Ireland  Natural features can be seen all over the island of Ireland.  These features are formed by nature and not by humans.  Some natural features have been around for millions of years.

3  Natural features exist all over the world.  Today we will look at some of Ireland’s most popular features.  Can you name some natural features?

4 Mountains  Carrauntoohil is Ireland’s tallest mountain.  It is 1038 metres tall which is pretty high.  Carrauntoohil is in Co. Kerry.  What is a name for a small mountain?

5 Rivers  The River Shannon is Ireland’s longest river.  The Shannon is 360km long.  The river starts in Co. Cavan and enters the Atlantic Ocean in Limerick City.

6 Lakes  Lough Neagh is Ireland’s largest lake.  It is in Northern Ireland.  The counties of Antrim, Derry, Tyrone, Armagh and Down have shores on the lake.  Can you find it on the map of Ireland?

7 Oceans  Ireland is an island and therefore is surrounded by water.  The Atlantic ocean is in the west and north, The Celtic Sea is in the south and the Irish Sea is in the east.

8 Cliffs  Cliffs are steep rock faces often found at the edge of the sea.  The Cliffs of Moher in Co. Clare are Ireland’s most famous cliffs.

9 Beaches  Beaches are made of sand and pebbles.  There are thousands of beautiful beaches along Ireland’s coast.  This beach is Inch Strand in Co. Kerry.

10 Bays and Headlands  Bays are formed where the land curves inward along the coast.  Headlands are narrow pieces of land that jut out into the sea.

11 Bogs  Bogs are common in the Irish countryside.  Bogs are made of peat, which is brown in colour.  Peat can be burned and used for fuel.

12 Question Time  How many natural features have you seen before?  How many natural features can you name?  What is your favourite? Why?  What is Ireland’s tallest mountain called?  How long is the River Shannon?  Can you name Ireland’s largest lake and some of the counties along it’s shoreline?  What feature is made of peat?
