The Basics of Guitar Ogletree Elementary School Music 2009 Mr. Wilson

A Message From Mr. Wilson Happy New Year 4 th Grader!, –This is a really exciting time for you in music. We will begin our guitar studies soon. We will study the parts of the guitar, how the guitar is played, and the history of string instruments. We will only learn the basics and will not do anything fancy. After we have completed our unit, you will be able to play a scale and a few chords and understand how to read simple guitar music. I look forward to this time with you. »Mr. Wilson

Compare The Two The next two slides are of an electric guitar and an acoustical guitar. Compare the two.

Electric Guitar

Acoustic Guitar

Share You and your partner share what differences you see between the two. (We may talk about this later in class)

What will we play? The Acoustic Guitar

Your Task Use the sheet I gave you and label the parts of the acoustic guitar. Be sure to put your name on your paper. Everyone labels a guitar. We will have guitar tests during this nine weeks on this information. After you have completed your sheet, please move to the next slide.

The Basics The guitar is a member of the strings family. It has 6 strings and 6 tuning pegs. Sound is made by strumming or plucking the strings and causing a vibration. The vibration goes into the sound hole and bounces around inside the guitar and finally comes out as the sound we know as a guitar.

Conclusion Now that you know a little about the guitar, be prepared to play very soon. We have to be patient with Mr. Wilson, Mr. Batson and with others. We have lots of learning to do and we must do a great job of listening. I know that some of you take guitar lessons and I think that is wonderful, but remember that are others who don’t, so lets try to stay with the entire class instead of trying to show-off what we know.

LETS GET STRUMMING !!
