3 Directions 1 Before you read Journey Home, take a look at the vocabulary words on the next slide. You are going to use this Power Point to preview some vocabulary. With your partner, you will also change and add to this slide show, but first, you need to give it a new name. Save this file like this: journey home_your last names. It should look something like this: JourneyHome_AlvarezRodriguez When you’ve finished renaming this file, click onto the next slide.

4 Directions 2 Before you read Journey Home, take a look at the vocabulary words on the next slide. In English, often the exact same word can be used in different ways in a sentence. Listen to the pronunciation of the words by clicking on the speaker icon. With your partner, repeat each word. Ready? Click to the next slide.

6 Directions 3 With a partner, go through each slide. Pronounce the word, read the sentence aloud (click on the speaker icon if you need a hint), and add your own sentence to the slide. Add a picture that goes with the sentence to help you remember what the word means. You can also include the word in your native language, if that helps you to remember. Ready? 9 birth (noun): the act of being born The birth of a baby is a happy occasion! Add your own sentence and picture!

10 birth (adjective): having to do with birth Examples: birth mother, birth father, birth family, birth name I met my birth father, and it turns out I look just like him! Add your own sentence and picture!

12 adopt (verb) taking legal responsibility for a child that is not your own by birth My friend adopted her five beautiful daughters from China. Add your own sentence and picture of your own!

13 adoption (noun): the act of becoming the legal parents of a child you did not give birth to My birthparents gave me up for adoption when I was a baby. Add your own sentence and picture!

14 adoptive: adjective: having to do with adoption: I have two mothers, my birth mother and my adoptive mother. Add your own sentence and picture!

15 Directions 4 Once you have finished adding to the Power Point, be sure to save the file. Now you are ready to read Journey Home. As you read, notice the different forms of “birth,” “adopt,” and “journey.” Key Question: How did the Vietnam War impact the lives of the narrator and her mother?
