1 Area & Perimeter Grade: 6 Erin Chandler

2 Rationale Allow students to apply their knowledge of area and perimeter to real world situations, giving them a greater understanding of the concepts As a math and science concentration I find geometry to be particularly important, even at a young age Why is real world application important? Objectives: Students will be able to calculate area and perimeter Students will be able to apply area and perimeter to real-life situations

3 Standards PDESAS: Common Core:
2.5.G.A: Develop a plan to analyze a problem, identify the information needed to solve the problem, carry out the plan, check whether an answer makes sense, and explain how the problem was solved in grade-appropriate contexts Common Core: CC A.1:find the area of right triangles, special triangles, quadrilaterals and other polygons by composing into rectangles or triangles; apply these methods in the context of solving real world math problems

4 Big Ideas & Essential Questions
What are the formulas for area and perimeter and how do we apply them to word problems? How do we form our answers to these word problems? Big Ideas: Attributes of objects are measurable i.e. length, width, height Area and perimeter are found in the world around us i.e. architecture, engineering, business, etc

5 Assessment Plan Formative
Day 1: handout with basic area, perimeter, and measurement Students will switch with a partner and correct and compare answers (Popham and WVDOE, peer and self assessments, think-pair-shair) Day 2: practice worksheet with real-world area, perimeter, and measurement Students chosen at random to demonstrate work on the board (practice presentations WVDOE) Day 3: assign project in which students chose object from home and find measurements to bring to school (also authentic assessment) Due day 5 (also visual representations WVDOE)

6 Assessment plan (cont.)
Day 4: extra credit quiz to evaluate what has been taught thus far No penalization only reward (constructive quizzes WVDOE) Day 5: presentation of project to class (oral presentations 25 Quick Formative Assessments) Summative End of lesson test will be given with both word problems and regular math problems to evaluate students’ understanding and teacher’s success

7 Lesson Plan Five 45 minute classes Basic area and perimeter sheet:
Word problem worksheet Day 1: Intro and formulas given on handout Day 2: Real-word pictures for area and perimeter Day 3: Word problem work through Day 4: More word problem practice Day 5: project presentations and test

8 Conclusion Through worksheets, peer work/editing, work on the board, presentations, and summative assessment students should have a good grasp on the big ideas Essential questions are answered early in lesson and referred back to each day Formative assessment allows students to work in groups, speak in front of the class, and demonstrate creativity By day 5 summative assessment should be no surprise content wise
