1 Tuesday Warm-Up Order the following from smallest to greatest:
Solar System, Galaxy, Universe, Planet What is a comet? What is a comet made of?

2 Planet Brochure Project!
Example: The Pluto Paradise Planet Brochure Project! Context: It is year You are working for a planetary travel agency. This company sells vacation packages to its customers. Your manager has just asked you to create a travel brochure for your assigned planet that compares it to the other planets in your grouping (inner or outer). Your brochure should be created by folding a single sheet of copy caper to be a tri-fold brochure, and should meet the following requirements on each page (6 total):

3 Points Requirement _______/10 Administrative details correct 1) Done on one piece of paper 2) Folded properly Pg 1 (Front Cover) 1) Student name and name of planet 2) Graphic of planet 3) Slogan for planet (why should you visit planet?!- Example: “Escape the Cold!”) Pg 2 (Relative size) 1) Planet diameter in miles or km 2) Size relative to other planets (Example: 2nd biggest planet) 3) Graphic of planets comparing size to Earth (should show if it is bigger or smaller) Pg 3 (Relative distance from the sun) 1) Includes measurement of distance (AU or Km) 2) Describes how far the planet is in relation to other planets (example; 3rd planet from sun) 3) Includes picture of solar system with planet labeled Pg 4 (Surface Features) 1) Surface features are described for planet (example: rocky, craters, made of gas) 2) Includes a picture Pg 5 (Atmospheric Features) 1) Atmosphere is described for planet (example: composed mostly of hydrogen and helium gases) Pg 6 (Interesting Facts) Gives at least 2 additional facts. Use planet reading or internet for this section! Includes a picture _______/30 Displays Effort Each page is colored Neat and displays effort ________/100 Total Points

4 The Solar System Brainpop: Match the description to each planet

5 Planet A large object in space that orbits a star

6 Two Groups of Planets Inner planets (AKA Terrestrial (Rocky) Planets)
- Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars Outer planets (AKA Giant Gas Planets) Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune

7 Inner Planets

8 Vocabulary! Atmosphere: The mixture of gases that surrounds a planet

9 Mercury Distance: Size: 1st Planet from the sun; distance 0.39 AU
Smallest planet 4,878 km diameter 38% of earth’s diameter

10 Mercury Very thin- oxygen, sodium, hydrogen Atmosphere: Surface:
Rocky – flat planes and craters Interesting Fact: Extreme temperatures: 170 degrees at night, 350 degrees during day

11 Venus Distance Second Planet from the sun 0.72 AU Size:
3rd smallest planet Close to Earth’s size (Earth’s Twin) 12,204 Km in diameter

12 Venus Atmosphere: Carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid; so dense you would be crushed by it! Surface: Rocky surface with active volcanoes and craters

13 Venus Interesting Fact: Venus’ heavy atmosphere of carbon dioxide traps heat! (Greenhouse effect)

14

15 Earth Distance 3rd planet from the sun Size 4th smallest planet
12,756 Km

16 Earth Atmosphere: Oxygen and nitrogen Surface:
Rocky, mountains and active volcanoes created by lithospheric plates 70% Water (oceans)

17 Earth Interesting Fact: Only planet known to support life
Moderate temperatures Water in liquid form Atmosphere with oxygen 1 Moon

18 Mars – “the red planet” 53% of Earth’s diameter 6,792 Km Diameter
Distance 4th planet from the sun 1.5 AU Size 53% of Earth’s diameter 6,792 Km Diameter 2nd smallest planet

19 Mars – “the red planet” Light. Mostly carbon dioxide Surface:
Atmosphere: Light. Mostly carbon dioxide Temperature: COLD!! -20 F Surface: Barren, rocky land with craters, extinct volcanoes. Lots of dust. Polar caps - frozen water and carbon dioxide

20 Mars – “the red planet” Life on Mars??? Somewhat moderate temperatures
Ice (not liquid water) No oxygen

21 The Outer Planets: Gas Giants

22

23 Four Outer Planets: The Gas Giants
Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune

24 Gas Giants Atmosphere: Very thick! Mostly hydrogen and helium.
Would crush you! Temperature: extremely cold!

25 Jupiter Distance: 5th planet from sun 5.2 AU Size: Largest planet.
11 times the size than Earth! 143,844 Km diameter

26 Jupiter Atmosphere: Mainly hydrogen and helium Temperature: -238°F!
Surface: No solid surface (gas) Rings: very thin rings

27 Interesting Fact: Great Red Spot! A hurricane-like cloud. 

28

29 Saturn Distance: 6th planet from sun 9.5 AU Size: 2nd largest planet
120,536 Km diameter 9X larger than Earth.

30 Saturn Atmosphere: Mainly Hydrogen & Helium Temperature: -292°F
Surface No solid surface (made of gas)

31 Interesting Fact: Saturn’s rings are mostly made of ice and rock
Interesting Fact: Saturn’s rings are mostly made of ice and rock! Each piece is orbiting around Saturn. There are hundreds of rings.

32 Uranus Location: 7th planet from the sun 19 AU Size 3rd largest planet
4X the size of Earth 51,118 km Diameter

33 Uranus Atmosphere: Mainly Hydrogen, Helium, and Methane
Temperature: -355°F Surface No solid surface (made of gas)

34 Uranus Interesting Fact: Uranus rotates from top to bottom!
Most planets rotate from side to side. Why is Uranus different? Billions of years ago, it may have been hit by a large object that knocked it on its side

35 Neptune Location: 8th planet from sun 30 AU Size: 4th largest planet
4 times size of earth 49,532 km diameter

36 Neptune Atmosphere: Mainly Hydrogen, Helium, and Methane
Looks blue because of poisonous methane. Temperature: :-364°F Surface No solid surface (made of gas) Rings: very thin rings

37 Life on the Gas Giants? No! No oxygen Too cold No liquid water

39 Comparison Card Game!! Task #1: Match the descriptive words with the planets Task #2: Match the statements with the planet (will be on board-next slide) Task #3: Order the following using planet cards. Smallest to biggest Closest to farthest Team must be checked by a teacher before writing on sheet!

40 Directions: Match the statements below with the correct planet
Red planet Poisonous Methane Top to bottom rotation Only planet with life Contains the “Great red spot” Hundreds of rings Hottest Planet Smallest planet

41 Friday Bell Ringer List the planets in order from smallest to largest in size Which planet rotates top to bottom? Which planet has red dust? Which planets are gassy planets?
