DO NOW What is a frame of reference and relative motion?
30
Frame of Reference In order to describe motion a frame of reference is needed A frame of reference is a system of objects that are not moving with respect to one another. How fast something is moving is dependent on the frame of reference Relative motion is movement in relation to a frame of reference
31
Distance Distance is the length of the path between two points. The SI unit is meters and large distances use kilometers
32
Displacement Is the direction from the starting point and the length of a straight line from the starting point to the end point. It is good to use displacements for directions You may need to combine displacements which can be done using vector addition since displacement is an example of a vector.
33
Combining Displacements Along A Straight Line If in the same direction you add them If in opposite directions you subtract them
34
Displacement Not Along A Straight Line When the vectors have different directions they may be combined by graphing. The straight line from the start to the end point is called the resultant vector and that is the displacement.
35
Recap Displacement is….. Direction from the starting point and the length of a straight line from the starting point to the ending point Distance is…… The length of the path between two points.
