2 › Candidates who achieved this standard most commonly demonstrated the following skills and knowledge.  Understanding of the meaning of the word “techniques.”  Ability to discuss the intention behind the use of techniques; they were able to include some discussion of the effects generated by techniques  Ability to address the question with specific supporting details about the text.  ability to incorporate phrases or vocabulary that supported analysis, into their answers

3  Candidates who did NOT achieve this standard lacked some or all of the skills and knowledge required for Achievement. They also commonly: › Did not include analysis of the text in their answers, but instead gave a plot summary. › Wrote shor and insufficient or incomplete answers › Discussed the text in general terms and did not include specific details › Did not fully understand the questions or what was required in order to write an answer that addressed the question. › Were unable to engage with the text at an analytical level. › Lacked sufficient knowledge and understanding of the text and often made factual errors.

4  In addition to the skills and knowledge required for Achievement, candidtates who achieved the standard with Merit commonly: › Were able to speak authoritatively about texts › Integrated analysis into their answers rather than listing it. › Demonstrated a more sophisticated understanding › Effectively used and integrated quotations into their answers to support points being made › Wrote confidently with appropriate use of vocabulary.

5  In addition to the skills and knowledge required for Achievement with Merit, candidates who achieved the standard with Excellence commonly: › Wrote in a fluent, insightful style. › Confidently addressed the director’s purpose in their analysis of the text › Perceptively analysed the text › Abandoned a formulaic approach to the structure and language of the essay; introductions were refreshingly different and signaled a confident approach to the question; many candidates used a quotation as a springboard into essay. › revealed a sophisticated understanding of thei positionning as the viewer synthesised ideas across the text › Were often original and striking in tone

6  1.Analyse how techniques were used to create a strong impression of at least ONE character or individual.  2. Analyse how the presentation of at least ONE setting helped develop an important theme.  3. Analyse how BOTH internal and external conflict were important to the text as a whole. Note: “internal conflict” means conflict within a character, and “external conflict” means conflict between a character and other individual(s) or group(s).  4. Analyse how techniques were used to create impact in ONE important section.  5. Analyse how the text influenced the audience to think differently about an idea or issue.  6. Analyse how the text is typical of its genre.  Note: “genre” might include science fiction, romance, drama, documentary, political speech, etc.

7  Analyse how BOTH internal and external conflict were important to the text as a whole. Note:”internal conflict” means conflict within a character and “ external sconflict” means conflict between a character and other individuial(s) or group (s). In Sean Penn’s film Into the Wild, the story was based around the development and resolutions of conflict. The main character, Christopher McCanolews” (aka Alexander Supertramp), faces internal conflict within himself and external conflict with his family and those he loves.

8 Analyse how BOTH internal and external conflict were important to the text as a whole. Note:”internal conflict” means conflict within a character and “ external conflict” means conflict between a character and other individuial(s) or group (s). In the film Mississippi Burning, directed by Alan Parker, an important internal conflict was within Ward, a straight laced agent who is forced to bend the rules to bring the KKK to justice. Important external conflicts were between the ‘Negro’ residents of Jessup County Mississippi and the local Ku Klux Klan, as well as the conflict between Agent Ward and Agent Anderson. The film deals with racism and prejudice in South America during 1964. These conflicts were important as they emphasised how bad racism was in that setting.

9 Analyse how techniques were used to create a strong impression of at least ONE character or individual.  What are the key words?  How does the question relate to your film?  Write an introduction that introduces your main idea, refers to the key words in the question and introduces your key points.  NOW try two of the other questions.
