1 Top Tips for Writing a Better Level 3 Essay When writing the poet’s name, write it in full the first time, then as a surname for the rest of the essay. SPELL THEIR NAME, AND THE TEXTS THEY WROTE, CORRECTLY. When referring to a line from a poem, call it a line from a poem, not a quote.

2 When quoting from a poem, try to embed quotes, or at least explain the relevance rather than ‘introduce’ the quote (as in the phrase “This is a line from the poem that will show what I mean…”). Just get straight to your point. Top Tips for Writing a Better Level 3 Essay

3 When concluding, DO NOT begin by writing “In conclusion”. There is never a need to ‘label’ the parts of your essay (You never use “In introduction…In my second body paragraph….” so no need to use “In conclusion”). Just get straight to your point. Top Tips for Writing a Better Level 3 Essay

5 When writing about the impact on the reader, use ‘me’, ‘my’ OR ‘the reader’ but there is NO need to write, “the impact on me, the reader”. When reviewing your essay in the last few minutes, check for repetition. Ask yourself – am I developing my answer (ADDING good ideas and convincing evidence to my answer) with what I have written here, or am I just repeating myself? Is this new, and useful information?

6 Dealing with questions that include the phrase To what extent do you agree with this view? Essay questions that include this phrase directly follow with this sentence... Respond to this question with close reference to one or more texts you have studied. Here comes some serious wisdom. Take this seriously… DON’T TAKE THIS AS A REQUEST TO EXPLAIN YOUR PERSONAL VIEWS. DON’T TAKE THIS AS A REQUEST TO EXPLAIN HOW MUCH THIS MIGHT BE TRUE FOR THE GENRE IN GENERAL. DON’T TAKE THIS AS A REQUEST TO EXPLAIN HOW MUCH THIS SHOULD NOT BE TRUE

7 Dealing with questions that include the phrase To what extent do you agree with this view? For the best response from markers, take note of the IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING INSTRUCTION (Respond to this question with close reference to one or more texts you have studied) and discuss how much this is true For YOUR TEXT(S). The text(s) you are writing about in that essay. Think of the sentence as not saying To what extent do you agree with this view? So much as To what extent does this apply to your studied text(s)? If that statement does NOT apply to your text (is just not true, for that novel, play, film) THEN DON’T ANSWER THAT QUESTION. These questions are designed to be TRUE for the majority of texts, and to be presented in a way that allows you to prove that they are TRUE for a text you have studied. Your job is to show the marker HOW MUCH THEY ARE TRUE FOR YOUR TEXT(S), using your knowledge of the text, and key examples. If you can incorporate a quote from beyond the text (from author/director themselves, or an expert/critic/pundit) that supports your argument (that that view IS true for your text) then open your introduction with it.

8 Writing an M/E Level 3 Essay Make direct reference to the text. TOP TIP: At level 3, make 3 points with at least 3 direct references for each point. Correctly name techniques that are used by the writer. TOP TIP: You don’t actually need that many (3 overall, minimum) BUT they are compulsory - MUST BE THERE SOMEWHERE. Symbolism...metaphor...anaphora…simile…personification…rhyme scheme….iambic pentameter (meter)…sonnet structure (quatrains, couplet)…pun…rhetorical question…personal pronoun…motif…. Analyse the purpose behind the inclusion of imagery/use of techniques. TOP TIP: Analysis is where the essay question is actually answered – try to use a paragraph structure that states a technique, gives example(s) of its use and then analyses how it delivers the purpose (followed by evaluation). Excellence level essay writers mention the writer’s purpose in their introduction. The poet uses the sonnet to show viewers that...the sonnet is an insight into...this quatrain develops the idea that...to make us fully aware that...used, in order to....uses this technique to help us understand...this creates the feeling that...Shakespeare wants to criticize….To reinforce the message that _____, Shakespeare uses….

9 Writing an M/E Level 3 Essay Evaluate whether the text is proof of the statement provided in the essay question. TOP TIP: This is done at the end of body paragraphs (following from analysis). These evaluations are re-iterated in the conclusion so that the conclusion becomes a summary of the writer’s evaluations Is well created...cleverly done...a great image/line/quatrian/couplet.. makes this crystal clear...is perfectly imagined...effective...works well...we begin to clearly see...does an impressive job...is not wholly successful...the poet’s message is unclear...Shakespeare fails to....the impact on the reader is immediate/profound…the impact on the reader not what is intended... Describe any links you notice between the text and other influences. TOP TIP: Links only need to be made once in each paragraph and can be brief. Links can be made to any other genre of text, work by the same author, quote from an academic paper, as well as real life: historical events and/or current events. This issue is also seen in our society when...we notice this in our own world when...we can relate to this, when we think of the real life story of...another text that deals with this is...Shakespeare mentioned these same ideas in his sonnet number...Last year in our own country....this references the work of another artist, that of....to quote another famous writer.....
