MEET THE ELEMENTS! PROJECT

Elements 0 All elements are abbreviated using a capital letter, and sometimes a lowercase letter. 0 Ex: 0 Ca = Calcium 0 N = Nitrogen 0 H = Hydrogen 0 Li = Lithium

0 In the next slide, you will see the chemical formula for the household items we cut out yesterday. 0 Please pick 6 elements from the household objects you would like to research.

12. Vinegar 13. Sugar 14. Dry Ice 15. Charcoal 16. Sand 17. Diamond 18. Baking Soda C 2 H 4 O 2 C 6 H 12 O 6 CO 2 C SiO 2 C NaHCO 3 1.Ammonia 2. Borax 3. Moth Balls 4. Alcohol 5. Cream of Tartar NH 3 Na 2 B 4 O 7 C 6 H 4 Cl 2 C 3 H 8 O KC 4 H 5 O 6 6. Milk of Magnesia 7. Hydrogen Peroxide 8. Epsom Salt 9. Chalk 10. Graphite 11. Salt Mg(OH) 2 H 2 O 2 MgSO 4 CaCO 3 C NaCl CHEMICAL FORMULAS EXAMPLE: I will find information about the elements C, H, and K

Instructions 0 You will be using your periodic table, please take it out. 0 For each element complete a box with the following information: 1. Name of the Element 2. The Element’s Symbol 3. The Atomic Number 4. The Atomic Mass 5. 3 Properties of this element (is it shiny? Malleable? Heavy? Metal?) 6. 3 common/household substances your element can be found in a) Use the pictures you cut out! b) Write the chemical formula next to the picture. 0 For #5 and #6 you may use your technology to look up the element. 0 This will be posted in the school hallways so be sure it is neat and complete!

Step 1 0 You will be using your periodic table, please take it out. 0 For each element find the following information: 1. Name of the Element a. Ex: C = Carbon b. Cl = Chlroine

Step 2 0 For each element find the following information: 0 The Element’s Symbol 0 Ex: The symbol for Carbon is C 0 The symbol for Fluorine is F

Step 3 0 For each element find the following information: 1. The Atomic Number 1. Ex: The atomic number for Silicon is 14

Step 4 0 For each element find the following information: 1. The Atomic Mass 1. Ex: The atomic mass of Silicon is 28.086 2. Click the next slide to see a BIG periodic table

Periodic Table

Step 5 0 For each element find the following information: 1. 3 Properties of this element 1. (is it shiny? Malleable? Heavy? Metal?) 2. 3 common/household substances your element can be found in a) Use the pictures you cut out! b) Write the chemical formula next to the picture. 0 For these steps you may use this website: http://www.ptable.com/ and this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uy0m7jnyv6Uhttp://www.ptable.com/http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uy0m7jnyv6U 0 This will be posted in the school hallways so be sure it is neat and complete
