3 It is a process in which yeast, sugar, and water are combined to produce alcohol and carbon dioxide.

4 o Beer- alcoholic beverage made by fermenting barley, corn, and rye. It is about 4 percent alcohol o Malt liquor- beer that has a higher alcohol content than regular beer. o Light beer- beer with fewer calories

5 o Wine- an alcoholic beverage made by fermenting grapes or other fruits. Most wines are about 12 to 14 percent alcohol. o Wine cooler- a carbonated fruit flavored alcoholic beverage that is about 1.5 to 6 percent alcohol.

6 o Liquor- an alcoholic beverage that is made by distillation. It is also called distilled spirits and contain about 40 percent alcohol. o Distillation- a process that uses a fermented mixture to obtain an alcoholic beverage with a high alcohol content. o Types of liquor include: Whisky, bourbon, rye, rum, gin, vodka, tequila, and brandy.

7 o Toxin- a substance that is poisonous. If too large amounts is swallowed, the stomach will reject it causing a person to vomit. o The body tries to remove alcohol from the body as quickly as possible. But it takes a while for the body to break the alcohol down. o Coffee, Showers, and fresh air DOES NOT break down alcohol. o Alcohol poisoning- body has become poisoned by drinking large amounts of alcohol

9 Nervous system- harms brain, destroy nerve cells, cause black outs and seizures, cause dementia Digestive system- increases risk of developing cancers of the mouth, esophagus, and stomach. Causes ulcers, increases risk of liver disease and alcoholic hepatitis(liver swells), cirrhosis, increases the risk of pancreatitis, malnutrition, and even anemia Immune system- depresses the function of this system. Increases risk of illnesses in the body, lowers the number of infection fighting cells in the body and decreases the ability of these cells to fight pathogens. Cardiovascular System- damages organs, increases risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, and stroke, increases risk of cardiomyopathy(heart muscles weaken, blood don’t pump effectively. Cause a loss of body heat causing frost bite or hypothermia in cold weather.

10 Skeletal System- alcohol causes the body to loose calcium resulting in osteoporosis Urinary system- increases urine flow, can cause kidney failure Reproductive system- in females in can delay menstrual cycle, cause irregular periods, and impair breast development. In males, it decreases the size of reproduction parts, can delay the age at which the voice deepens and reduce the amount of facial and body hair.
