3. We live at Irakleio
Irakleio  is a suburb in the northeastern part of the Athens , Greece, and a municipality of the Attica region.
Irakleio is located about 8 km northeast of Athens city centre
Its built-up area is continuous with those of the neighbouring suburbs Nea Ionia, Metamorfosi, Lykovrysi and Pefki.
Irakleio is subdivided into several quarters, including Palaio Irakleio, Neo Irakleio, Ano Irakleio and Prasinos Lofos. The main thoroughfare is Irakleiou Avenue, which connects it with central Athens.
The northern beltway of Athens, Motorway 6, passes through Irakleio. Irakleio is served by bus, by a metro station (Irakleio station) and by a commuter railway station (Irakleio railway station).
It is a residential area with detatched , semi-detached houses with gardens and some block of flats. There are a lot of cafes at our central square and small green parks .

4. How Iraklio ( our suburb ) got its name
In ancient Greece, Heraklion was one of the municipalities of Cleisthenes named Ifaistiada or Ifistiai. To the north of the suburb was the temple of Hercules, where he and the newest name. At the time of Byzantium called Araklis or coppersmiths. In later years, the era of Otto built the Old Heraklion Military Colony of the Bavarians (1837), who were the mercenaries he had brought with him when he came Otto as King of Greece. First indeed governor had appointed Christopher Nezer, grandfather of the great actor.
The area is not randomly chosen. It is said that the courtiers of Otto on the orders of slaughtered lambs and left in different parts of Attica. Where lambs will rotted later thought that had less moisture and better climate. Indeed lambs rotted later in Heraklion so chosen area. Over the years the Bavarians inhabitants were assimilated by the locals and Hellenized only keeping the Catholic doctrine and name. Often the Bavarian brand even nowadays (Vanger, Pitlinger, Kelmager, Fix and others).

7. HOW ATHENS GOT ITS NAME
Long before it became a great city and the birthplace of democracy, the area of Athens must have been a very beautiful place. Otherwise one cannot explain how some of the most important ancient gods dueled to give it their name.
In the end it was Poseidon, the god of the sea and Athena, the goddess of wisdom, who reached the final round. Zeus, out of whose head Athena was born, in order to avoid a violent encounter between the two gods, declared that each should make an offer to the new city and its name would go to the god whose offer would be accepted by the citizens.
It must have been quite a sight, with all the Olympian gods sitting on one side and the citizens on the other while Athena and Poseidon stood in the middle, ready for the naming competition. Poseidon, who was Zeus' brother and uncle of Athena, came first and struck the rock of the Acropolis, opening a spring of water. This was interpreted as an indication that Poseidon was offering the new city success in war and at sea.

8. HOW ATHENS GOT ITS NAME
Then Athena came forward and dropped a seed to the ground. It immediately turned into an olive tree. This was meant to indicate that the goddess was offering the new city the fruits of peace and wisdom, which the citizens accepted and named their city Athens, while the owl, the bird connected with Athena and signified wisdom, became the pet animal of the Athenians.
This is why when money was invented and Athenians adopted as their currency the drachma, they used to have the profile of Athena on the one side and the owl on the other.

9. ACROPOLIS
The Acropolis of Athens (Ancient Greek Ἀκρόπολις; Modern Greek: Ακρόπολη Αθηνών) is an ancient citadel located on a high rocky outcrop above the city of Athens and contains the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historic significance, the most famous being the Parthenon.
The word acropolis comes from the Greek words ἄκρον (akron, "edge, extremity") and πόλις (polis, "city").Although there are many other acropoleis in Greece, the significance of the Acropolis of Athens is such that it is commonly known as "The Acropolis" without qualification.

The National Archeological Museum is located in the center of Athens. It is one of the greatest museums in the world and it contains a rich collection of status and artifacts from ancient Greece. You can find a gift shop in it with replicas to buy for friends and relatives if you ever visit Greece!

13. Syntagma Square and the change of the guard
A major point of interest for any traveler to Athens is the Syntagma Square. The most famous aspect of Syntagma is the changing of the guards by the Evzones in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The Hellenic Parliament Building is located here as well as various buses, trolleys and tram stops.
A fountain, ancient statues and two large grassy areas offer the picture perfect place for photos and picnics. Most major events that occur in Greece have been celebrated at the Syntagma Square. It’s also the site of various political functions, and it was also at this square that the Military Junta government was overthrown in Besides the Hellenic Parliament building, other interests include the historic hotels Grande Bretagne and George II.

14. PLAKA
Plaka is a very nice area for tourists to visit. It has many shops to buy souvenirs. If you want to taste the Greek cuisine, you can visit one of the most popular Greek taverns. Greek taverns, are Greek restaurants, with traditional Greek food. I recommend you to visit Plaka, if you come to Athens.

15. MONASTIRAKI
Monastiraki , is a flea market neighborhood in the old town of Athens, Greece, and is one of the main shopping area in Athens. The area is home to clothing boutiques, souvenir shops, and special stores, and is a major tourist attraction in Athens and Attica for bazaar shopping. The area is named after Monastiraki Square, which in turn is named for the Church of the Pantanassa that is located within the square. The main streets of this area are Pandrossou Street and Adrianou Street.

Don’t miss the experience of a summer cinema. One of the most characteristic and beautiful elements of the Greek and even more so the Athenian summer are the mythical summer cinemas. Those which the Italians call “cinema sotto le stelle”, meaning “cinema under the stars”.
Athenian summer cinemas bring back unforgettable memories of summer nights surrounded by potted plants and their aromas. Songs from loud speakers fill the gaps during the intermission while the canteen owner serves his customers and sometimes tries to sell his ware to the seated spectators by shouting “lemonádes” (lemonades). The moon, the illuminated windows of the surrounding houses and apartments, the youngsters who watch free of charge from their balconies. This is an unbelievable atmosphere!!!!
