WEEKS TOPICS 1. The solar system. The sun and the nine planets. 2. The solar system cont’d. The planets and there characteristics. 3. The earth as a planet. The shape and the size of the earth, the proofs of earth’s sphericity, 4. Earths movements. Rotation, revolution and their effects. 5. Latitudes- meaning, uses and calculation of distance. 6. Longitudes- meaning, uses and calculation of local time.

7 Associated terms- Greenwich mean time, international date line, and standard time. 8 The structure of the earth, - the outer structure- atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere. 9 The internal structure of the earth- the crust, the mantle and the core. 10 The rocks of the earth- igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic rocks. Their importance and characteristics. 11 Mountains- types, characteristics, examples and importance.

 MEANING;-  The solar system comprises of the sun and the nine planets with their satellites.  The planets include mercury, Venus, earth, mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.  the satellites are smaller objects moving round the planets, e.g. the moon is the satellite of the earth.

 THE SUN;-  The is a stationary and the largest member of the solar system.  Its surface temperature is about 6000 oc  Ti is the source of heat and light in the solar system.  Mercury;- is the first and the smallest planet in the solar system.  Venus;- it is the second closest planet to the sun. it is called the earths twin.  Earth;- it is the only habitable planet in the solar system. It has only one satellite.  Mars;- mars has the possibility of supporting plants life. It has two satellites.

 Jupiter;- it is the largest planet. It surface comprises of gases such as methane and hydrogen. It has twelve satellites.  Saturn;- it is the second largest planet. It has three rings, nine satellites and completes its orbit in 29.5 years.  Uranus;- it is the only planet that revolve round the sun in a clockwise direction. It has five satellites.  Neptune;- it is a very cold planet. It has two satellites.  Pluto;- it is the coldest and farthest planet from the sun. It has the longest orbit around the sun. it has no satellite.

 THE MOON;-  It is the only satellite of the earth.  It has no light of its own but reflects that of the sun.  It revolve round the earth once in every 28days.  There is no air or water on the moon.

 ASSIGNMENT; 1.On a drawing sheet, draw the diagram of the solar system with the planets in the order of appearance. 2. Choose any four planets and write four new characteristics of them.
