Student Guide to Laptop Use GETTING READY: The Basic Steps in Using the Laptop Computers!
2
Clean Hands Always start by washing your hands before you use the laptops. Laptop Numbers Each laptop is numbered. Each time your class uses the laptops, your teacher will assign you a laptop. Your teacher will record your name next to that laptop number. You are the student responsible for using and caring for this laptop unless otherwise instructed by your teacher. Do not let another student use your assigned laptop. Example: OPC2GO03
3
Pick-up Procedures: Prior to leaving your desk, clear all chairs and backpacks from the aisles! Walk on the right side to avoid collisions. Only 2 students should be at the Laptop Cart at one time. The next 2 students should be waiting to join the line creating a steady flow of traffic.
4
More Pick-up Procedures: Make sure the person next to you has room to get their laptop. Make sure you are directly in front of your laptop when you reach for it. Unplug the laptop before you pull the computer from the shelf.
5
Returning to your Desk It is extremely important to return to your desk in the proper manner. We don’t want to risk somebody getting hurt or damage to an expensive computer. Hold the laptop with 2 hands. Go with the flow of traffic while walking back to your seat. Place laptop on desk/table before sitting. Do not open the laptop until you are seated.
6
Inspection Check the laptop for any damage and report it IMMEDIATELY!!! Are there any pen marks, scratches missing keys? Laptop numbers are assigned, so teachers will be able to trace the users.
7
Opening up the Computer Use 2 hands to open the laptop. While holding the bottom half of the laptop with one hand, use your other hand to gently lift the top and open the laptop. Do NOT touch the screen while opening. This is put unwanted stress on screen.
8
Using the Track Pad & Clicker Do not scratch the pad with you fingernail or any other object. Only use the tip of your finger to move mouse along the screen. Don’t be afraid to use the ENTIRE track pad surface. It’s more efficient this way.
9
Turning on the Laptops Press the button on the bottom left corner of the screen, and wait for the computer to boot up. Allow the computer to boot up– Do not play with the keyboard and/or mouse. It only confuses the computer and causes it to work more slowly.
10
Logging In Students should have your user name and password available. Username: First letter of your first name, last name, year of graduation. Example: jsample22 (no spaces) Password: First 3 numbers of your student id, your 3 initials, and the last 2 digits of your student id. Example: 123abc45
11
Shutting Down Close your open applications. Hit ctrl, alt, delete then you will see an icon in the bottom right side of the screen, click that and click “Shut Down.” Wait for the laptop to shut down completely. The screen will go black. Close the laptop using two hands.
12
When Returning the Laptop to the Cart Wait for your turn to walk to the cart. Carry your laptop up with two hands following the same procedure as before. Make sure you check the cords and clear enough space for the laptop to be put back. Place laptop in assigned spot and then plug-in cord. The light around the cord should light up. Place the laptops in the cart so that the Opening is facing you.
13
Congratulations! If you understand the procedures and promise to follow them, you are now ready to use the laptop computers!
