1. Models and Strategies to Compare Fractions Unit of Study: 7 Global Concept Guide: 2 of 4

2. Content Development This concept should take approximately 2 days. The focus is understanding unit fractions and using the strategy same numerator to make comparisons. Models of unit fractions should be used to help students compare and order fractions. Begin with a concrete representation such as the area model (fraction tiles/fraction circles) to help students understand the size of the units. Students will use the understanding of unit fractions to compare fractions with the same numerator. Number lines should be HEAVILY emphasized as it is an efficient strategy for comparing and ordering fractions.

3. Day 1  How can you compare unit fractions?  The focus of today is students developing an understanding of unit fractions.  Through hands on experience, students will understand that the larger the digit in the denominator the smaller the piece.

4. Day 2  How can you compare fractions that have the same numerator?  Students transfer their knowledge of the size of unit fractions to the application of the strategy same numerator.  Students have three of each sized piece. The fifth sized pieces are larger than the twelfths sized pieces. Therefore, three fifths is greater than three twelfths.

5. Enrich/Reteach  For students struggling with comparing and ordering unit fractions, provide them with fraction tiles and have them select the three different unit fractions and order them from least to greatest. 6. Enrich/Reteach  To extend students thinking have them write a problem that requires comparing fractions with the same numerators.
