As part of its Cold War soft power strategy, the United States government used its broadcasters Voice of America and Radio Free Europe to send anti-communist and pro-American propaganda to Soviet-bloc countries. The US governmeent also made propaganda films and dramas such as “Duck and Cover“ and “Red Nightmare” to inform and warn Americans about the communist threat. In Britain, the BBC made a program called “The War Game” (1965) about the consequences of nuclear war with the Soviets.

15 Hollywood played a major role in Cold War propaganda with many films, such as I Married a Communist and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The espionage icon James Bond, too, was a classic Cold War creation in a series of hit films such as From Russia With Love. Perhaps the most famous Hollywood movie about the Cold War was Stanley Kubrick’s Dr Strangelove. See this link for clips from “Top 5 Cold War-era Thrillers“.

16

17 There were also many Cold War posters on both sides, portraying the rival system in a negative light. See this link for “Cold War Propaganda Posters“. The Soviet Union made films and cartoons, such as “The Millionaire“, portraying America and the capitalist world as corrupt. See also “Cold War Propaganda from the Other Side of the Fence“.
