Public Service Announcement: The Affects of Deforestation on Biodiversity By: Mariel Sass and Abby Spector
2
What Is The Problem? deforestation is decreasing the biodiversity on Earth deforestation: removal of a forest or trees to build a building or to be used for paper biodiversity: variety of organisms in an ecosystem that can be used to determine the health of an environment the forest is home to many animals food chains will greatly be affected without one animal, its predators will run out of food and the animals it eats will grow as a population.

4
Is There Anywhere In Particular That Is Being More Heavily Affected? rainforests are greatly affected by deforestation destroys the natural habitats of 50-90% of all organisms tropical rainforests: home to over 50 million organisms & 50-100 of the different organisms are lost everyday.
5
How Are We Causing It? building roads malls houses resorts supplies (paper and wood)

7
Possible outcomes if not stopped or prevented? organisms that live in forests and rain forests will be wiped out trees and plants won’t be there to give us oxygen animals can go extinct If we do stop… there will be a lot more organisms living because we are the main source of deforestation
8
What is the environmental impact of deforestation on biological diversity? we cut down numerous trees to build resorts and roads animals eat plants and leaves on trees forced to move somewhere else chain reaction Stewart Smith who wrote “The Effects of Deforestation on Animals” claims that when deforestation happens: increases the chances of the species becoming extinct the value of a tree alive is greater than when it is dead trees have a never ending cycle of taking in carbon dioxide and putting out oxygen snowball into a bigger problem: animals move into different areas and possibly mix in with suburban or urban life when they don’t belong there.
9
Other human interferences factories and other big buildings are opening up more opportunity to create more air pollution if roads are created it makes more air pollution with emission from cars
10
Ways We Can Help in Our Day- to-Day Life 1. Reduce Your Consumption of Paper Products buy organic buy reusable 2. Think Twice before Printing email! 3. RECYCLE recycle paper
11
How Does Deforestation Impact Natural Biogeochemical Cycles? Carbon trees take in CO 2 in order to do photosynthesis there isn’t as much carbon intake creates more of a “greenhouse” effect carbon traps heat in our atmosphere. Trees help regulate the carbon and oxygen levels, and without them, the levels are abnormal
