5 Elements of Engagement Eight methods of engagement as discussed by Block (Block, 2011, pg. 263-275)  Open with Transparent Purpose and a Level Playing Field  Describe concerns  Define present change effort  Discuss organizational needs  Discuss structure  Renegotiate Expectations About Participation  Discuss what is needed/expected from participants  Don’t rely on the “status quo”

6 Elements of Engagement  Rearrange the Room  Room arrangement sends a message  “If we can change the room, and they way we inhabit it, we can also change the institution and they way we inhabit it” (Block,2011, p. 266).  Create a Platform for Openness and Doubt  Provide a venue for all voices and opinions to be heard  Doubts and reservations are critical elements

7 Elements of Engagement  Ask “What Do We Want to Create Together?”  Promotes collaboration  Requires accountability  Create a New Conversation  “A change in action is preceded by a change in the conversation” (Block, 2011, p. 270).  New conversations bring new energy and new ideas

8 Elements of Engagement  Choose Commitment and Accountability  Building block for capacity  Accountability to peers and boss  Commitment without negotiation/barter  Focus on Gifts  Use strengths (gifts) of participants  Bring closure by focusing on gifts/value of participants
