8 Facts on Rio Rio de Janeiro is Brazil’s second largest city. Sao Paulo is the first. Rio de Janeiro was the capital of Brazil for almost two centuries from 1763 to 1960 when it was moved to Brasilia. With roots in Africa, Brazil’s famous Samba music started in the neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro. Rio is host to Brazil’s largest holiday and party celebration in the country –(and world)…Carnival!
