DESIGN OF ULTRA-WIDEBAND ANTENNA By: ROBI’ATUN ADAYIAH AWANG Faculty of Electrical Engineering Shah Alam

Introduction In the past few years Ultra wideband (UWB) technology has received increasing attention in the communication system. The FCC has mandated that UWB radio transmissions can legally operate in the range from 3.1 GHz up to 10.6 GHz Its main envisioned advantages over conventional (narrowband) wireless communications systems are: low transmit power levels, high-data rates, and possibly simpler hardware configurations

Research Background Some of the critical requirements in UWB antenna design are: ultra wide bandwidth, directional or omni-directional radiation patterns, constant gain and group delay over the entire band and high radiation efficiency. Approved spectrum by FCC Comm, medical imaging and measurement systems (3.1 GHz -10.6 GHz) Ground penetrating radar (<960 MHz) and wall imaging (3.1 GHz -10.6 GHz) Thru-wall imaging and surveillance system (1.99 GHz -10.6 GHz) Vehicular radar system (22-29 GHz)

Problem Statement Most of the research works have been focused in omni-directional UWB antenna where the design present radiation patterns similar to the traditional monopole/dipole antenna. The antenna covers a wide area with reasonable gain but not suitable for long distance. Just suitable for indoor environments. Proposed the high directional/directivity antenna as they have focused beam with high gain, suitable for long distance communications. The directional UWB antenna also will minimize the effect of electromagnetic radiation to the human body.

Research Objective To investigate an ultra-wideband antenna using metamaterial. To identify suitable dielectric thickness for the antenna To investigate the suitable structure that will give high directivity characteristics.

Research Methodology Literature Review Modeling and Simulation  Mathematical equation (Matlab, Maple)  Simulation and Design using Genesys and CST. Data Analysis from simulation Result Hardware Construction (Fabrication) Testing & Measurement Performance Analysis & Synthesis Documentation & Report

Benefits of the project New/improved material – Metamaterial with new structure for ultra-wideband antenna. Human Capital and expert development  Bachelor students, master student and Research staffs with new specialization (antenna design and analysis)
