2 Introduction What is UTP?
UTP (Unbalanced Twisted Pair) is a new way of transmitting CCTC signal on ordinary low-cost CAT 5 type data cables using low-cost Baluns (Balance Unbalance) Why UTP? Most new commercial (and even residential) building developments are installing CAT 5 data ‘’backbones’’ as standard for building management systems. These can be integrated TCP/IP or standard protocols (Eg: LonWorks). If there is spare unused cabling UTP CCTV can use existing installations. Cat 5 cable is significantly cheaper than traditional RG59 and can fit far more conductors into a smaller space. This can be an advantage when duct/riser space is limited, particularly in older buildings.

Basic product type: There are two basic types of UTP transceivers :- Passive and Active These can be used in one of the following three ways depending on distance and type of cable used Passive Active

19 Passive to Passive (400M Cat5)
Passive is the simplest type of UTP Balun It does not need an external power source, but does have distance limitations Passive Tx/Rx are always transceivers, so units can be used at either end of the system

20 Passive to Active (800M Cat5)
Passive to Active has the advantage of extended range (800M), plus it does not need external power down at the camera end The Active receivers can be individually specified and powered or utilise rack mount hubs for easy installation

21 Active to Active (1.2km Cat5)
Active to Active has the advantage of of super extended range (1200M), Active receivers offer extra noise immunity and surge protection Active transmitters and receivers need 12Vdc at camera and receiver ends to operate Active transmitters have 3 position gain switch (L,M,H) and active receivers have a 5 position gain switch depending on cable length used. First set the 5 position DIP switch on the receiver depending on cable length deployed Meters (Cat 5) Position 1 = 0-200 Position 2 = Position 3 = Position 4 = Position 5 = Then, if necessary set the Transmitter gain to Low, Medium or High to achieve a 1 volt Pk to Pk video signal
